Judges

19:1And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the farther side of the hill-country of Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Beth-lehem-judah. 19:2And his concubine played the harlot against him, and went away from him unto her father's house to Beth-lehem-judah, and was there the space of four months. 19:3And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak kindly unto her, to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father's house; and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him. 19:4And his father-in-law, the damsel's father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there. 19:5And it came to pass on the fourth day, that they arose early in the morning, and he rose up to depart: and the damsel's father said unto his son-in-law, Strengthen thy heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward ye shall go your way. 19:6So they sat down, and did eat and drink, both of them together: and the damsel's father said unto the man, Be pleased, I pray thee, to tarry all night, and let thy heart be merry. 19:7And the man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law urged him, and he lodged there again. 19:8And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the damsel's father said, Strengthen thy heart, I pray thee, and tarry ye until the day declineth; and they did eat, both of them. 19:9And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the damsel's father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thy heart may be merry; and to-morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.

19:10But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus (the same is Jerusalem): and there were with him a couple of asses saddled; his concubine also was with him. 19:11When they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it. 19:12And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside into the city of a foreigner, that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah. 19:13And he said unto his servant, Come and let us draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah. 19:14So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them near to Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin. 19:15And they turned aside thither, to go in to lodge in Gibeah: and he went in, and sat him down in the street of the city; for there was no man that took them into his house to lodge.

19:16And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even: now the man was of the hill-country of Ephraim, and he sojourned in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites. 19:17And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou? 19:18And he said unto him, We are passing from Beth-lehem-judah unto the farther side of the hill-country of Ephraim; from thence am I, and I went to Beth-lehem-judah: and I am now going to the house of Jehovah; and there is no man that taketh me into his house. 19:19Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man that is with thy servants: there is no want of anything. 19:20And the old man said, Peace be unto thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street. 19:21So he brought him into his house, and gave the asses fodder; and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.

19:22As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain base fellows, beset the house round about, beating at the door; and they spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thy house, that we may know him. 19:23And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into my house, do not this folly. 19:24Behold, here is my daughter a virgin, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not any such folly. 19:25But the men would not hearken to him: so the man laid hold on his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go. 19:26Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man's house where her lord was, till it was light.

19:27And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way; and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, with her hands upon the threshold. 19:28And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going; but none answered: then he took her up upon the ass; and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place. 19:29And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel. 19:30And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider it, take counsel, and speak.

The Acts of the Apostles

23:1And Paul, looking stedfastly on the council, said, Brethren, I have lived before God in all good conscience until this day. 23:2And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth. 23:3Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: and sittest thou to judge me according to the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law? 23:4And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God's high priest? 23:5And Paul said, I knew not, brethren, that he was high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of a ruler of thy people. 23:6But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Brethren, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees: touching the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question. 23:7And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and Sadducees; and the assembly was divided. 23:8For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess both. 23:9And there arose a great clamor: and some of the scribes of the Pharisees part stood up, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: and what if a spirit hath spoken to him, or an angel? 23:10And when there arose a great dissension, the chief captain, fearing lest Paul should be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them, and bring him into the castle. 23:11And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer: for as thou hast testified concerning me at Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome. 23:12And when it was day, the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul. 23:13And they were more than forty that made this conspiracy. 23:14And they came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, to taste nothing until we have killed Paul. 23:15Now therefore do ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you, as though ye would judge of his case more exactly: and we, before he comes near, are ready to slay him. 23:16But Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, and he came and entered into the castle and told Paul. 23:17And Paul called unto him one of the centurions, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain; for he hath something to tell him. 23:18So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and saith, Paul the prisoner called me unto him, and asked me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath something to say to thee. 23:19And the chief captain took him by the hand, and going aside asked him privately, What is it that thou hast to tell me? 23:20And he said, The Jews have agreed to ask thee to bring down Paul tomorrow unto the council, as though thou wouldest inquire somewhat more exactly concerning him. 23:21Do not thou therefore yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, who have bound themselves under a curse, neither to eat nor to drink till they have slain him: and now are they ready, looking for the promise from thee. 23:22So the chief captain let the young man go, charging him, Tell no man that thou hast signified these things to me. 23:23And he called unto him two of the centurions, and said, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night: 23:24and he bade them provide beasts, that they might set Paul thereon, and bring him safe unto Felix the governor. 23:25And he wrote a letter after this form: 23:26Claudius Lysias unto the most excellent governor Felix, greeting. 23:27This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be slain of them, when I came upon them with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman. 23:28And desiring to know the cause wherefore they accused him, I brought him down unto their council: 23:29whom I found to be accused about questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds. 23:30And when it was shown to me that there would be a plot against the man, I sent him to thee forthwith, charging his accusers also to speak against him before thee. 23:31So the soldiers, as it was commanded them, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris. 23:32But on the morrow they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the castle: 23:33and they, when they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, presented Paul also before him. 23:34And when he had read it, he asked of what province he was; and when he understood that he was of Cilicia, 23:35I will hear thee fully, said he, when thine accusers also are come: and he commanded him to be kept in Herod's palace.

Jeremiah

33:1Moreover the word of Jehovah came unto Jeremiah the second time, while he was yet shut up in the court of the guard, saying, 33:2Thus saith Jehovah that doeth it, Jehovah that formeth it to establish it; Jehovah is his name: 33:3Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and will show thee great things, and difficult, which thou knowest not. 33:4For thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are broken down to make a defence against the mounds and against the sword; 33:5while men come to fight with the Chaldeans, and to fill them with the dead bodies of men, whom I have slain in mine anger and in my wrath, and for all whose wickedness I have hid my face from this city: 33:6Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them; and I will reveal unto them abundance of peace and truth. 33:7And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return, and will build them, as at the first. 33:8And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned against me, and whereby they have transgressed against me. 33:9And this city shall be to me for a name of joy, for a praise and for a glory, before all the nations of the earth, which shall hear all the good that I do unto them, and shall fear and tremble for all the good and for all the peace that I procure unto it. 33:10Thus saith Jehovah: Yet again there shall be heard in this place, whereof ye say, It is waste, without man and without beast, even in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, that are desolate, without man and without inhabitant and without beast, 33:11the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voice of them that say, Give thanks to Jehovah of hosts, for Jehovah is good, for his lovingkindness endureth for ever; and of them that bring sacrifices of thanksgiving into the house of Jehovah. For I will cause the captivity of the land to return as at the first, saith Jehovah. 33:12Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Yet again shall there be in this place, which is waste, without man and without beast, and in all the cities thereof, a habitation of shepherds causing their flocks to lie down. 33:13In the cities of the hill-country, in the cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the South, and in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, shall the flocks again pass under the hands of him that numbereth them, saith Jehovah. 33:14Behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that I will perform that good word which I have spoken concerning the house of Israel and concerning the house of Judah. 33:15In those days, and at that time, will I cause a Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 33:16In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely; and this is the name whereby she shall be called: Jehovah our righteousness. 33:17For thus saith Jehovah: David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel; 33:18neither shall the priests the Levites want a man before me to offer burnt-offerings, and to burn meal-offerings, and to do sacrifice continually. 33:19And the word of Jehovah came unto Jeremiah, saying, 33:20Thus saith Jehovah: If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, so that there shall not be day and night in their season; 33:21then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he shall not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers. 33:22As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured; so will I multiply the seed of David my servant, and the Levites that minister unto me. 33:23And the word of Jehovah came to Jeremiah, saying, 33:24Considerest thou not what this people have spoken, saying, The two families which Jehovah did choose, he hath cast them off? thus do they despise my people, that they should be no more a nation before them. 33:25Thus saith Jehovah: If my covenant of day and night stand not, if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth; 33:26then will I also cast away the seed of Jacob, and of David my servant, so that I will not take of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and will have mercy on them.

Psalms

A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son.

 3:1Jehovah, how are mine adversaries increased!

 Many are they that rise up against me.

 3:2Many there are that say of my soul,

 There is no help for him in God.

Selah

 3:3But thou, O Jehovah, art a shield about me;

 My glory and the lifter up of my head.

 3:4I cry unto Jehovah with my voice,

 And he answereth me out of his holy hill.

Selah

 3:5I laid me down and slept;

 I awaked; for Jehovah sustaineth me.

 3:6I will not be afraid of ten thousands of the people

 That have set themselves against me round about.

 3:7Arise, O Jehovah; save me, O my God:

 For thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone;

 Thou hast broken the teeth of the wicked.

 3:8Salvation belongeth unto Jehovah:

 Thy blessing be upon thy people.

Psalm 4

For the Chief Musician; on stringed instruments. A Psalm of David.

 4:1Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness;

 Thou hast set me at large when I was in distress:

 Have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.

 4:2O ye sons of men, how long shall my glory be turned into dishonor?

 How long will ye love vanity, and seek after falsehood?

Selah

 4:3But know that Jehovah hath set apart for himself him that is godly:

 Jehovah will hear when I call unto him.

 4:4Stand in awe, and sin not:

 Commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still.

Selah

 4:5Offer the sacrifices of righteousness,

 And put your trust in Jehovah.

 4:6Many there are that say, Who will show us any good?

 Jehovah, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us.

 4:7Thou hast put gladness in my heart,

 More than they have when their grain and their new wine are increased.

 4:8In peace will I both lay me down and sleep;

 For thou, Jehovah, alone makest me dwell in safety.
