5:1This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; 5:2male and female created he them, and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created. 5:3And Adam lived a hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth: 5:4and the days of Adam after he begat Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters. 5:5And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.
5:6And Seth lived a hundred and five years, and begat Enosh: 5:7and Seth lived after he begat Enosh eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters: 5:8and all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years: and he died.
5:9And Enosh lived ninety years, and begat Kenan. 5:10and Enosh lived after he begat Kenan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters: 5:11and all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years: and he died.
5:12And Kenan lived seventy years, and begat Mahalalel: 5:13and Kenan lived after he begat Mahalalel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters: 5:14and all the days of Kenan were nine hundred and ten years: and he died.
5:15And Mahalalel lived sixty and five years, and begat Jared: 5:16And Mahalalel lived after he begat Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters: 5:17and all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred ninety and five years: and he died.
5:18And Jared lived a hundred sixty and two years, and begat Enoch: 5:19and Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: 5:20And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died.
5:21And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: 5:22and Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: 5:23and all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: 5:24and Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.
5:25And Methuselah lived a hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech: 5:26and Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters. 5:27And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died.
5:28And Lamech lived a hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son: 5:29and he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us in our work and in the toil of our hands, which cometh because of the ground which Jehovah hath cursed. 5:30And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters: 5:31And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years: and he died.
5:32And Noah was five hundred years old: And Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
5:1And seeing the multitudes, he went up into the mountain: and when he had sat down, his disciples came unto him: 5:2and he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,
5:3Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
5:4Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5:5Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
5:6Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
5:7Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
5:8Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
5:9Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called sons of God.
5:10Blessed are they that have been persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 5:11Blessed are ye when men shall reproach you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 5:12Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets that were before you.
5:13Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under foot of men. 5:14Ye are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. 5:15Neither do men light a lamp, and put it under the bushel, but on the stand; and it shineth unto all that are in the house. 5:16Even so let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
5:17Think not that I came to destroy the law or the prophets: I came not to destroy, but to fulfil. 5:18For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass away from the law, till all things be accomplished. 5:19Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 5:20For I say unto you, that except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven.
5:21Ye have heard that it was said to them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: 5:22but I say unto you, that every one who is angry with his brother shall be in danger of the judgment; and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council; and whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of the hell of fire. 5:23If therefore thou art offering thy gift at the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath aught against thee, 5:24leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way, first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. 5:25Agree with thine adversary quickly, while thou art with him in the way; lest haply the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. 5:26Verily I say unto thee, thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou have paid the last farthing.
5:27Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 5:28but I say unto you, that every one that looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. 5:29And if thy right eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell. 5:30And if thy right hand causeth thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body go into hell. 5:31It was said also, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: 5:32but I say unto you, that every one that putteth away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, maketh her an adulteress: and whosoever shall marry her when she is put away committeth adultery.
5:33Again, ye have heard that it was said to them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: 5:34but I say unto you, swear not at all; neither by the heaven, for it is the throne of God; 5:35nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 5:36Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, for thou canst not make one hair white or black. 5:37But let your speech be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: and whatsoever is more than these is of the evil one.
5:38Ye have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: 5:39but I say unto you, resist not him that is evil: but whosoever smiteth thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. 5:40And if any man would go to law with thee, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. 5:41And whosoever shall compel thee to go one mile, go with him two. 5:42Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
5:43Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy: 5:44but I say unto you, love your enemies, and pray for them that persecute you; 5:45that ye may be sons of your Father who is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sendeth rain on the just and the unjust. 5:46For if ye love them that love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? 5:47And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the Gentiles the same? 5:48Ye therefore shall be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
5:1Now the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem; in the name of the God of Israel prophesied they unto them. 5:2Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets of God, helping them. 5:3At the same time came to them Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shethar-bozenai, and their companions, and said thus unto them, Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall? 5:4Then we told them after this manner, what the names of the men were that were making this building. 5:5But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, and they did not make them cease, till the matter should come to Darius, and then answer should be returned by letter concerning it. 5:6The copy of the letter that Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shethar-bozenai, and his companions the Apharsachites, who were beyond the River, sent unto Darius the king; 5:7they sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus: Unto Darius the king, all peace. 5:8Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls; and this work goeth on with diligence and prospereth in their hands. 5:9Then asked we those elders, and said unto them thus, Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall? 5:10We asked them their names also, to certify thee, that we might write the names of the men that were at the head of them. 5:11And thus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and are building the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Israel builded and finished. 5:12But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon. 5:13But in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree to build this house of God. 5:14And the gold and silver vessels also of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto one whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor; 5:15and he said unto him, Take these vessels, go, put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be builded in its place. 5:16Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundations of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not completed. 5:17Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let there be search made in the king's treasure-house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem; and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.
5:1But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, 5:2and kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet. 5:3But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thy heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back part of the price of the land? 5:4While it remained, did it not remain thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thy power? How is it that thou hast conceived this thing in thy heart? thou has not lied unto men, but unto God. 5:5And Ananias hearing these words fell down and gave up the ghost: and great fear came upon all that heard it. 5:6And the young men arose and wrapped him round, and they carried him out and buried him. 5:7And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in. 5:8And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much. And she said, Yea, for so much. 5:9But Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to try the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them that have buried thy husband are at the door, and they shall carry thee out. 5:10And she fell down immediately at his feet, and gave up the ghost: and the young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her by her husband. 5:11And great fear came upon the whole church, and upon all that heard these things. 5:12And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch. 5:13But of the rest durst no man join himself to them: howbeit the people magnified them; 5:14and believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of them and women; 5:15insomuch that they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that, as Peter came by, at the least his shadow might overshadow some one of them. 5:16And there also came together the multitudes from the cities round about Jerusalem, bring sick folk, and them that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one. 5:17But the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy, 5:18and laid hands on the apostles, and put them in public ward. 5:19But an angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them out, and said, 5:20Go ye, and stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this Life. 5:21And when they heard this, they entered into the temple about daybreak, and taught. But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison-house to have them brought. 5:22But the officers that came found them not in the prison; and they returned, and told, 5:23saying, The prison-house we found shut in all safety, and the keepers standing at the doors: but when we had opened, we found no man within. 5:24Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were much perplexed concerning them whereunto this would grow. 5:25And there came one and told them, Behold, the men whom ye put in the prison are in the temple standing and teaching the people. 5:26Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them, but without violence; for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned. 5:27And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them, 5:28saying, We strictly charged you not to teach in this name: and behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us. 5:29But Peter and the apostles answered and said, We must obey God rather than men. 5:30The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew, hanging him on a tree. 5:31Him did God exalt with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, to give repentance to Israel, and remission of sins. 5:32And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God hath given to them that obey him. 5:33But they, when they heard this, were cut to the heart, and minded to slay them. 5:34But there stood up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in honor of all the people, and commanded to put the men forth a little while. 5:35And he said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves as touching these men, what ye are about to do. 5:36For before these days rose up Theudas, giving himself out to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were dispersed, and came to nought. 5:37After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the enrolment, and drew away some of the people after him: he also perished; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered abroad. 5:38And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will be overthrown: 5:39but if it is of God, ye will not be able to overthrow them; lest haply ye be found even to be fighting against God. 5:40And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles unto them, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 5:41They therefore departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the Name. 5:42And every day, in the temple and at home, they ceased not to teach and to preach Jesus as the Christ.
