Genesis

16:1Now Sarai, Abram's wife, bare him no children: and she had a handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. 16:2And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, Jehovah hath restrained me from bearing; go in, I pray thee, unto my handmaid; it may be that I shall obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai. 16:3And Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife. 16:4And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes. 16:5And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I gave my handmaid into they bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: Jehovah judge between me and thee. 16:6But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her that which is good in thine eyes. And Sarai dealt hardly with her, and she fled from her face.

16:7And the angel of Jehovah found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. 16:8And he said, Hagar, Sarai's handmaid, whence camest thou? and whither goest thou? And she said, I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sarai. 16:9And the angel of Jehovah said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands. 16:10And the angel of Jehovah said unto her, I will greatly multiply thy seed, that it shall not be numbered for multitude. 16:11And the angel of Jehovah said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son; and thou shalt call his name Ishmael, because Jehovah hath heard thy affliction. 16:12And he shall be as a wild ass among men; his hand shall be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell over against all his brethren. 16:13And she called the name of Jehovah that spake unto her, Thou art a God that seeth: for she said, Have I even here looked after him that seeth me? 16:14Wherefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

16:15And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bare, Ishmael. 16:16And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.

Matthew

15:1Then there come to Jesus from Jerusalem Pharisees and scribes, saying, 15:2Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. 15:3And he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? 15:4For God said, Honor thy father and thy mother: and, He that speaketh evil of father or mother, let him die the death. 15:5But ye say, whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, That wherewith thou mightest have been profited by me is given to God; 15:6he shall not honor his father. And ye have made void the word of God because of your tradition. 15:7Ye hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,

 15:8This people honoreth me with their lips;

 But their heart is far from me.

 15:9But in vain do they worship me,

 Teaching as their doctrines the precepts of men.

15:10And he called to him the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: 15:11Not that which entereth into the mouth defileth the man; but that which proceedeth out of the mouth, this defileth the man. 15:12Then came the disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, when they heard this saying? 15:13But he answered and said, Every plant which my heavenly Father planted not, shall be rooted up. 15:14Let them alone: they are blind guides. And if the blind guide the blind, both shall fall into a pit. 15:15And Peter answered and said unto him, Declare unto us the parable. 15:16And he said, Are ye also even yet without understanding? 15:17Perceive ye not, that whatsoever goeth into the mouth passeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? 15:18But the things which proceed out of the mouth come forth out of the heart; and they defile the man. 15:19For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, railings: 15:20these are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not the man.

15:21And Jesus went out thence, and withdrew into the parts of Tyre and Sidon. 15:22And behold, a Canaanitish woman came out from those borders, and cried, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a demon. 15:23But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. 15:24But he answered and said, I was not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 15:25But she came and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. 15:26And he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread and cast it to the dogs. 15:27But she said, Yea, Lord: for even the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table. 15:28Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it done unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was healed from that hour.

15:29And Jesus departed thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and he went up into the mountain, and sat there. 15:30And there came unto him great multitudes, having with them the lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and they cast them down at this feet; and he healed them: 15:31insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb speaking, the maimed whole, and lame walking, and the blind seeing: and they glorified the God of Israel.

15:32And Jesus called unto him his disciples, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days and have nothing to eat: and I would not send them away fasting, lest haply they faint on the way. 15:33And the disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so many loaves in a desert place as to fill so great a multitude? 15:34And Jesus said unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few small fishes. 15:35And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground; 15:36and he took the seven loaves and the fishes; and he gave thanks and brake, and gave to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes. 15:37And they all ate, and were filled: and they took up that which remained over of the broken pieces, seven baskets full. 15:38And they that did eat were four thousand men, besides women and children. 15:39And he sent away the multitudes, and entered into the boat, and came into the borders of Magadan.

Nehemiah

5:1Then there arose a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews. 5:2For there were that said, We, our sons and our daughters, are many: let us get grain, that we may eat and live. 5:3Some also there were that said, We are mortgaging our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses: let us get grain, because of the dearth. 5:4There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king's tribute upon our fields and our vineyards. 5:5Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought into bondage already: neither is it in our power to help it; for other men have our fields and our vineyards. 5:6And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words. 5:7Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I held a great assembly against them. 5:8And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, that were sold unto the nations; and would ye even sell your brethren, and should they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found never a word. 5:9Also I said, The thing that ye do is not good: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God, because of the reproach of the nations our enemies? 5:10And I likewise, my brethren and my servants, do lend them money and grain. I pray you, let us leave off this usury. 5:11Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their fields, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them. 5:12Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do, even as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they would do according to this promise. 5:13Also I shook out my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labor, that performeth not this promise; even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the assembly said, Amen, and praised Jehovah. And the people did according to this promise. 5:14Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor. 5:15But the former governors that were before me were chargeable unto the people, and took of them bread and wine, besides forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God. 5:16Yea, also I continued in the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work. 5:17Moreover there were at my table, of the Jews and the rulers, a hundred and fifty men, besides those that came unto us from among the nations that were round about us. 5:18Now that which was prepared for one day was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this I demanded not the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy upon this people. 5:19Remember unto me, O my God, for good, all that I have done for this people.

Acts

15:1And certain men came down from Judaea and taught the brethren, saying, Except ye be circumcised after the custom of Moses, ye cannot be saved. 15:2And when Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and questioning with them, the brethren appointed that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question. 15:3They therefore, being brought on their way by the church, passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren. 15:4And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church and the apostles and the elders, and they rehearsed all things that God had done with them. 15:5But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees who believed, saying, It is needful to circumcise them, and to charge them to keep the law of Moses. 15:6And the apostles and the elders were gathered together to consider of this matter. 15:7And when there had been much questioning, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Brethren, ye know that a good while ago God made choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel, and believe. 15:8And God, who knoweth the heart, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Spirit, even as he did unto us; 15:9and he made no distinction between us and them, cleansing their hearts by faith. 15:10Now therefore why make ye trial of God, that ye should put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? 15:11But we believe that we shall be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in like manner as they. 15:12And all the multitude kept silence; and they hearkened unto Barnabas and Paul rehearsing what signs and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles through them. 15:13And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Brethren, hearken unto me: 15:14Symeon hath rehearsed how first God visited the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name. 15:15And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,

 15:16After these things I will return,

 And I will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen;

 And I will build again the ruins thereof,

 And I will set it up:

 15:17That the residue of men may seek after the Lord,

 And all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called,

 15:18Saith the Lord, who maketh these things known from of old.

15:19Wherefore my judgment is, that we trouble not them that from among the Gentiles turn to God; 15:20but that we write unto them, that they abstain from the pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from what is strangled, and from blood. 15:21For Moses from generations of old hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath. 15:22Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole church, to choose men out of their company, and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren: 15:23and they wrote thus by them, The apostles and the elders, brethren, unto the brethren who are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia, greeting: 15:24Forasmuch as we have heard that certain who went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls; to whom we gave no commandment; 15:25it seemed good unto us, having come to one accord, to choose out men and send them unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, 15:26men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15:27We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who themselves also shall tell you the same things by word of mouth. 15:28For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things: 15:29that ye abstain from things sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication; from which if ye keep yourselves, it shall be well with you. Fare ye well. 15:30So they, when they were dismissed, came down to Antioch; and having gathered the multitude together, they delivered the epistle. 15:31And when they had read it, they rejoiced for the consolation. 15:32And Judas and Silas, being themselves also prophets, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them. 15:33And after they had spent some time there, they were dismissed in peace from the brethren unto those that had sent them forth. 15:34But it seemed good unto Silas to abide there. 15:35But Paul and Barnabas tarried in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also. 15:36And after some days Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us return now and visit the brethren in every city wherein we proclaimed the word of the Lord, and see how they fare. 15:37And Barnabas was minded to take with them John also, who was called Mark. 15:38But Paul thought not good to take with them him who withdrew from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work. 15:39And there arose a sharp contention, so that they parted asunder one from the other, and Barnabas took Mark with him, and sailed away unto Cyprus; 15:40but Paul choose Silas, and went forth, being commended by the brethren to the grace of the Lord. 15:41And he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches.
