Joshua

10:1Now it came to pass, when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them; 10:2that they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty. 10:3Wherefore Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying, 10:4Come up unto me, and help me, and let us smite Gibeon; for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel. 10:5Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped against Gibeon, and made war against it.

10:6And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the hill-country are gathered together against us. 10:7So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor. 10:8And Jehovah said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thy hands; there shall not a man of them stand before thee. 10:9Joshua therefore came upon them suddenly; for he went up from Gilgal all the night. 10:10And Jehovah discomfited them before Israel, and he slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah. 10:11And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, while they were at the descent of Beth-horon, that Jehovah cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more who died with the hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

10:12Then spake Joshua to Jehovah in the day when Jehovah delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel; and he said in the sight of Israel,

 Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon;

 And thou, Moon, in the valley of Aijalon.

 10:13And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed,

 Until the nation had avenged themselves of their enemies.

Is not this written in the book of Jashar? And the sun stayed in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day. 10:14And there was no day like that before it or after it, that Jehovah hearkened unto the voice of a man: for Jehovah fought for Israel.

10:15And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

10:16And these five kings fled, and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah. 10:17And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah. 10:18And Joshua said, Roll great stones unto the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to keep them: 10:19but stay not ye; pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for Jehovah your God hath delivered them into your hand. 10:20And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed, and the remnant which remained of them had entered into the fortified cities, 10:21that all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.

10:22Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring forth those five kings unto me out of the cave. 10:23And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon. 10:24And it came to pass, when they brought forth those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the chiefs of the men of war that went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them. 10:25And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed; be strong and of good courage: for thus shall Jehovah do to all your enemies against whom ye fight. 10:26And afterward Joshua smote them, and put them to death, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening. 10:27And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had hidden themselves, and laid great stones on the mouth of the cave, unto this very day.

10:28And Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof: he utterly destroyed them and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining; and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done unto the king of Jericho.

10:29And Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah: 10:30and Jehovah delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining in it; and he did unto the king thereof as he had done unto the king of Jericho.

10:31And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it: 10:32and Jehovah delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel; and he took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.

10:33Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.

10:34And Joshua passed from Lachish, and all Israel with him, unto Eglon; and they encamped against it, and fought against it; 10:35and they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword; and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.

10:36And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron; and they fought against it: 10:37and they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but he utterly destroyed it, and all the souls that were therein.

10:38And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir, and fought against it: 10:39and he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to the king thereof.

10:40So Joshua smote all the land, the hill-country, and the South, and the lowland, and the slopes, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but he utterly destroyed all that breathed, as Jehovah, the God of Israel, commanded. 10:41And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon. 10:42And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because Jehovah, the God of Israel, fought for Israel. 10:43And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

Psalms

Maschil of David, when he was in the cave; a Prayer.

 142:1I cry with my voice unto Jehovah;

 With my voice unto Jehovah do I make supplication.

 142:2I pour out my complaint before him;

 I show before him my trouble.

 142:3When my spirit was overwhelmed within me,

 Thou knewest my path.

 In the way wherein I walk

 Have they hidden a snare for me.

 142:4Look on my right hand, and see;

 For there is no man that knoweth me:

 Refuge hath failed me;

 No man careth for my soul.

 142:5I cried unto thee, O Jehovah;

 I said, Thou art my refuge,

 My portion in the land of the living.

 142:6Attend unto my cry;

 For I am brought very low:

 Deliver me from my persecutors;

 For they are stronger than I.

 142:7Bring my soul out of prison,

 That I may give thanks unto thy name:

 The righteous shall compass me about;

 For thou wilt deal bountifully with me.

Psalm 143

A Psalm of David.

 143:1Hear my prayer, O Jehovah; give ear to my supplications:

 In thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness.

 143:2And enter not into judgment with thy servant;

 For in thy sight no man living is righteous.

 143:3For the enemy hath persecuted my soul;

 He hath smitten my life down to the ground:

 He hath made me to dwell in dark places, as those that have been long dead.

 143:4Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me;

 My heart within me is desolate.

 143:5I remember the days of old;

 I meditate on all thy doings;

 I muse on the work of thy hands.

 143:6I spread forth my hands unto thee:

 My soul thirsteth after thee, as a weary land.

Selah

 143:7Make haste to answer me, O Jehovah; my spirit faileth:

 Hide not thy face from me,

 Lest I become like them that go down into the pit.

 143:8Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning;

 For in thee do I trust:

 Cause me to know the way wherein I should walk;

 For I lift up my soul unto thee.

 143:9Deliver me, O Jehovah, from mine enemies:

 I flee unto thee to hide me.

 143:10Teach me to do thy will;

 For thou art my God:

 Thy Spirit is good;

 Lead me in the land of uprightness.

 143:11Quicken me, O Jehovah, for thy name's sake:

 In thy righteousness bring my soul out of trouble.

 143:12And in thy lovingkindness cut off mine enemies,

 And destroy all them that afflict my soul;

 For I am thy servant.

Jeremiah

4:1If thou wilt return, O Israel, saith Jehovah, if thou wilt return unto me, and if thou wilt put away thine abominations out of my sight; then shalt thou not be removed; 4:2and thou shalt swear, As Jehovah liveth, in truth, in justice, and in righteousness; and the nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory. 4:3For thus saith Jehovah to the men of Judah and to Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns. 4:4Circumcise yourselves to Jehovah, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem; lest my wrath go forth like fire, and burn so that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings. 4:5Declare ye in Judah, and publish in Jerusalem; and say, Blow ye the trumpet in the land: cry aloud and say, Assemble yourselves, and let us go into the fortified cities. 4:6Set up a standard toward Zion: flee for safety, stay not; for I will bring evil from the north, and a great destruction. 4:7A lion is gone up from his thicket, and a destroyer of nations; he is on his way, he is gone forth from his place, to make thy land desolate, that thy cities be laid waste, without inhabitant. 4:8For this gird you with sackcloth, lament and wail; for the fierce anger of Jehovah is not turned back from us. 4:9And it shall come to pass at that day, saith Jehovah, that the heart of the king shall perish, and the heart of the princes; and the priests shall be astonished, and the prophets shall wonder. 4:10Then said I, Ah, Lord Jehovah! surely thou hast greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall have peace; whereas the sword reacheth unto the life. 4:11At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A hot wind from the bare heights in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to winnow, nor to cleanse; 4:12a full wind from these shall come for me: now will I also utter judgments against them. 4:13Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots shall be as the whirlwind: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe unto us! for we are ruined. 4:14O Jerusalem, wash thy heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thine evil thoughts lodge within thee? 4:15For a voice declareth from Dan, and publisheth evil from the hills of Ephraim: 4:16make ye mention to the nations; behold, publish against Jerusalem, that watchers come from a far country, and give out their voice against the cities of Judah. 4:17As keepers of a field are they against her round about, because she hath been rebellious against me, saith Jehovah. 4:18Thy way and thy doings have procured these things unto thee; this is thy wickedness; for it is bitter, for it reacheth unto thy heart. 4:19My anguish, my anguish! I am pained at my very heart; my heart is disquieted in me; I cannot hold my peace; because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war. 4:20Destruction upon destruction is cried; for the whole land is laid waste: suddenly are my tents destroyed, and my curtains in a moment. 4:21How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet? 4:22For my people are foolish, they know me not; they are sottish children, and they have no understanding; they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge. 4:23I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was waste and void; and the heavens, and they had no light. 4:24I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved to and fro. 4:25I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled. 4:26I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful field was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of Jehovah, and before his fierce anger. 4:27For thus saith Jehovah, The whole land shall be a desolation; yet will I not make a full end. 4:28For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black; because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and I have not repented, neither will I turn back from it. 4:29Every city fleeth for the noise of the horsemen and bowmen; they go into the thickets, and climb up upon the rocks: every city is forsaken, and not a man dwelleth therein. 4:30And thou, when thou art made desolate, what wilt thou do? Though thou clothest thyself with scarlet, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou enlargest thine eyes with paint, in vain dost thou make thyself fair; thy lovers despise thee, they seek thy life. 4:31For I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, the anguish as of her that bringeth forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion, that gaspeth for breath, that spreadeth her hands, saying, Woe is me now! for my soul fainteth before the murderers.

Matthew

18:1In that hour came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven? 18:2And he called to him a little child, and set him in the midst of them, 18:3and said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye turn, and become as little children, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven. 18:4Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 18:5And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me: 18:6But whoso shall cause one of these little ones that believe on me to stumble, it is profitable for him that a great millstone should be hanged about his neck, and that he should be sunk in the depth of the sea.

18:7Woe unto the world because of occasions of stumbling! for it must needs be that the occasions come; but woe to that man through whom the occasion cometh! 18:8And if thy hand or thy foot causeth thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from thee: it is good for thee to enter into life maimed or halt, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into the eternal fire. 18:9And if thine eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is good for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the hell of fire. 18:10See that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven. 18:11For the Son of man came to save that which was lost. 18:12How think ye? if any man have a hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and go unto the mountains, and seek that which goeth astray? 18:13And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth over it more than over the ninety and nine which have not gone astray. 18:14Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.

18:15And if thy brother sin against thee, go, show him his fault between thee and him alone: if he hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. 18:16But if he hear thee not, take with thee one or two more, that at the mouth of two witnesses or three every word may be established. 18:17And if he refuse to hear them, tell it unto the church: and if he refuse to hear the church also, let him be unto thee as the Gentile and the publican. 18:18Verily I say unto you, what things soever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and what things soever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. 18:19Again I say unto you, that if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father who is in heaven. 18:20For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

18:21Then came Peter and said to him, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? until seven times? 18:22Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times; but, Until seventy times seven. 18:23Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, who would make a reckoning with his servants. 18:24And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, that owed him ten thousand talents. 18:25But forasmuch as he had not wherewith to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. 18:26The servant therefore fell down and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. 18:27And the lord of that servant, being moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt. 18:28But that servant went out, and found one of his fellow-servants, who owed him a hundred shillings: and he laid hold on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay what thou owest. 18:29So his fellow-servant fell down and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee. 18:30And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay that which was due. 18:31So when his fellow-servants saw what was done, they were exceeding sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done. 18:32Then his lord called him unto him, and saith to him, Thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou besoughtest me: 18:33shouldest not thou also have had mercy on thy fellow-servant, even as I had mercy on thee? 18:34And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due. 18:35So shall also my heavenly Father do unto you, if ye forgive not every one his brother from your hearts.
