24:1And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God. 24:2And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt of old time beyond the River, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nahor: and they served other gods. 24:3And I took your father Abraham from beyond the River, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac. 24:4And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave unto Esau mount Seir, to possess it: and Jacob and his children went down into Egypt. 24:5And I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did in the midst thereof: and afterward I brought you out. 24:6And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and with horsemen unto the Red Sea. 24:7And when they cried out unto Jehovah, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes saw what I did in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness many days. 24:8And I brought you into the land of the Amorites, that dwelt beyond the Jordan: and they fought with you; and I gave them into your hand, and ye possessed their land; and I destroyed them from before you. 24:9Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and fought against Israel: and he sent and called Balaam the son of Beor to curse you; 24:10but I would not hearken unto Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand. 24:11And ye went over the Jordan, and came unto Jericho: and the men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Girgashite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; and I delivered them into your hand. 24:12And I sent the hornet before you, which drove them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; not with thy sword, nor with thy bow. 24:13And I gave you a land whereon thou hadst not labored, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell therein; of vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.
24:14Now therefore fear Jehovah, and serve him in sincerity and in truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River, and in Egypt; and serve ye Jehovah. 24:15And if it seem evil unto you to serve Jehovah, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve Jehovah.
24:16And the people answered and said, Far be it from us that we should forsake Jehovah, to serve other gods; 24:17for Jehovah our God, he it is that brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and that did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the peoples through the midst of whom we passed; 24:18and Jehovah drove out from before us all the peoples, even the Amorites that dwelt in the land: therefore we also will serve Jehovah; for he is our God.
24:19And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve Jehovah; for he is a holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgression nor your sins. 24:20If ye forsake Jehovah, and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you evil, and consume you, after that he hath done you good. 24:21And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve Jehovah. 24:22And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you Jehovah, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses. 24:23Now therefore put away, said he, the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto Jehovah, the God of Israel. 24:24And the people said unto Joshua, Jehovah our God will we serve, and unto his voice will we hearken. 24:25So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem. 24:26And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a great stone, and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of Jehovah. 24:27And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us; for it hath heard all the words of Jehovah which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness against you, lest ye deny your God. 24:28So Joshua sent the people away, every man unto his inheritance.
24:29And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Jehovah, died, being a hundred and ten years old. 24:30And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathserah, which is in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash. 24:31And Israel served Jehovah all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, and had known all the work of Jehovah, that he had wrought for Israel.
24:32And the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in the parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of money: and they became the inheritance of the children of Joseph. 24:33And Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him in the hill of Phinehas his son, which was given him in the hill-country of Ephraim.
4:1And as they spake unto the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, 4:2being sore troubled because they taught the people, and proclaimed in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 4:3And they laid hands on them, and put them in ward unto the morrow: for it was now eventide. 4:4But many of them that heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand. 4:5And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem; 4:6and Annas the high priest was there, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest. 4:7And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, By what power, or in what name, have ye done this? 4:8Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders, 4:9if we this day are examined concerning a good deed done to an impotent man, by what means this man is made whole; 4:10be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even in him doth this man stand here before you whole. 4:11He is the stone which was set at nought of you the builders, which was made the head of the corner. 4:12And in none other is there salvation: for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, wherein we must be saved. 4:13Now when they beheld the boldness of Peter and John, and had perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. 4:14And seeing the man that was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it. 4:15But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, 4:16saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been wrought through them, is manifest to all that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it. 4:17But that it spread no further among the people, let us threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name. 4:18And they called them, and charged them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. 4:19But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it is right in the sight of God to hearken unto you rather than unto God, judge ye: 4:20for we cannot but speak the things which we saw and heard. 4:21And they, when they had further threatened them, let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people; for all men glorified God for that which was done. 4:22For the man was more than forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing was wrought. 4:23And being let go, they came to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said unto them. 4:24And they, when they heard it, lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, O Lord, thou that didst make the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all that in them is: 4:25who by the Holy Spirit, by the mouth of our father David thy servant, didst say,
Why did the Gentiles rage,
And the peoples imagine vain things?
4:26The kings of the earth set themselves in array,
And the rulers were gathered together,
Against the Lord, and against his Anointed:
4:27for of a truth in this city against thy holy Servant Jesus, whom thou didst anoint, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, were gathered together, 4:28to do whatsoever thy hand and thy council foreordained to come to pass. 4:29And now, Lord, look upon their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants to speak thy word with all boldness, 4:30while thy stretchest forth thy hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of thy holy Servant Jesus. 4:31And when they had prayed, the place was shaken wherein they were gathered together; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spake the word of God with boldness. 4:32And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and soul: and not one of them said that aught of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. 4:33And with great power gave the apostles their witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. 4:34For neither was there among them any that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, 4:35and laid them at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto each, according as any one had need. 4:36And Joseph, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas (which is, being interpreted, Son of exhortation), a Levite, a man of Cyprus by race, 4:37having a field, sold it, and brought the money and laid it at the apostles' feet.
13:1Thus saith Jehovah unto me, Go, and buy thee a linen girdle, and put it upon thy loins, and put it not in water. 13:2So I bought a girdle according to the word of Jehovah, and put it upon my loins. 13:3And the word of Jehovah came unto me the second time, saying, 13:4Take the girdle that thou hast bought, which is upon thy loins, and arise, go to the Euphrates, and hide it there in a cleft of the rock. 13:5So I went, and hid it by the Euphrates, as Jehovah commanded me. 13:6And it came to pass after many days, that Jehovah said unto me, Arise, go to the Euphrates, and take the girdle from thence, which I commanded thee to hide there. 13:7Then I went to the Euphrates, and digged, and took the girdle from the place where I had hid it; and, behold, the girdle was marred, it was profitable for nothing. 13:8Then the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying, 13:9Thus saith Jehovah, After this manner will I mar the pride of Judah, and the great pride of Jerusalem. 13:10This evil people, that refuse to hear my words, that walk in the stubbornness of their heart, and are gone after other gods to serve them, and to worship them, shall even be as this girdle, which is profitable for nothing. 13:11For as the girdle cleaveth to the loins of a man, so have I caused to cleave unto me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah, saith Jehovah; that they may be unto me for a people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory: but they would not hear. 13:12Therefore thou shalt speak unto them this word: Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Every bottle shall be filled with wine: and they shall say unto thee, Do we not certainly know that every bottle shall be filled with wine? 13:13Then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land, even the kings that sit upon David's throne, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, with drunkenness. 13:14And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, saith Jehovah: I will not pity, nor spare, nor have compassion, that I should not destroy them. 13:15Hear ye, and give ear; be not proud; for Jehovah hath spoken. 13:16Give glory to Jehovah your God, before he cause darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains, and, while ye look for light, he turn it into the shadow of death, and make it gross darkness. 13:17But if ye will not hear it, my soul shall weep in secret for your pride; and mine eye shall weep sore, and run down with tears, because Jehovah's flock is taken captive. 13:18Say thou unto the king and to the queen-mother, Humble yourselves, sit down; for your headtires are come down, even the crown of your glory. 13:19The cities of the South are shut up, and there is none to open them: Judah is carried away captive, all of it; it is wholly carried away captive. 13:20Lift up your eyes, and behold them that come from the north: where is the flock that was given thee, thy beautiful flock? 13:21What wilt thou say, when he shall set over thee as head those whom thou hast thyself taught to be friends to thee? shall not sorrows take hold of thee, as of a woman in travail? 13:22And if thou say in thy heart, Wherefore are these things come upon me? for the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts uncovered, and thy heels suffer violence. 13:23Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil. 13:24Therefore will I scatter them, as the stubble that passeth away, by the wind of the wilderness. 13:25This is thy lot, the portion measured unto thee from me, saith Jehovah; because thou hast forgotten me, and trusted in falsehood. 13:26Therefore will I also uncover thy skirts upon thy face, and thy shame shall appear. 13:27I have seen thine abominations, even thine adulteries, and thy neighings, the lewdness of thy whoredom, on the hills in the field. Woe unto thee, O Jerusalem! thou wilt not be made clean; how long shall it yet be?
27:1Now when morning was come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: 27:2and they bound him, and led him away, and delivered him up to Pilate the governor.
27:3Then Judas, who betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 27:4saying, I have sinned in that I betrayed innocent blood. But they said, What is that to us? see thou to it. 27:5And he cast down the pieces of silver into the sanctuary, and departed; and he went away and hanged himself. 27:6And the chief priests took the pieces of silver, and said, It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is the price of blood. 27:7And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. 27:8Wherefore that field was called, the field of blood, unto this day. 27:9Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was priced, whom certain of the children of Israel did price; 27:10and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.
27:11Now Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest. 27:12And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. 27:13Then saith Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee? 27:14And he gave him no answer, not even to one word: insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly. 27:15Now at the feast the governor was wont to release unto the multitude one prisoner, whom they would. 27:16And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas. 27:17When therefore they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ? 27:18For he knew that for envy they had delivered him up. 27:19And while he was sitting on the judgment-seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that righteous man; for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him. 27:20Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. 27:21But the governor answered and said unto them, Which of the two will ye that I release unto you? And they said, Barabbas. 27:22Pilate saith unto them, What then shall I do unto Jesus who is called Christ? They all say, Let him be crucified. 27:23And he said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out exceedingly, saying, Let him be crucified. 27:24So when Pilate saw that he prevailed nothing, but rather that a tumult was arising, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this righteous man; see ye to it. 27:25And all the people answered and said, His blood be on us, and on our children. 27:26Then released he unto them Barabbas; but Jesus he scourged and delivered to be crucified.
27:27Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium, and gathered unto him the whole band. 27:28And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. 27:29And they platted a crown of thorns and put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they kneeled down before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! 27:30And they spat upon him, and took the reed and smote him on the head. 27:31And when they had mocked him, they took off from him the robe, and put on him his garments, and led him away to crucify him.
27:32And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to go with them, that he might bear his cross.
27:33And they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, The place of a skull, 27:34they gave him wine to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted it, he would not drink. 27:35And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments among them, casting lots; 27:36and they sat and watched him there. 27:37And they set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. 27:38Then are there crucified with him two robbers, one on the right hand and one on the left. 27:39And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, 27:40and saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself: if thou art the Son of God, come down from the cross. 27:41In like manner also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, 27:42He saved others; himself he cannot save. He is the King of Israel; let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe on him. 27:43He trusteth on God; let him deliver him now, if he desireth him: for he said, I am the Son of God. 27:44And the robbers also that were crucified with him cast upon him the same reproach.
27:45Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. 27:46And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? 27:47And some of them stood there, when they heard it, said, This man calleth Elijah. 27:48And straightway one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. 27:49And the rest said, Let be; let us see whether Elijah cometh to save him. 27:50And Jesus cried again with a loud voice, and yielded up his spirit. 27:51And behold, the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake; and the rocks were rent; 27:52and the tombs were opened; and many bodies of the saints that had fallen asleep were raised; 27:53and coming forth out of the tombs after his resurrection they entered into the holy city and appeared unto many. 27:54Now the centurion, and they that were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earthquake, and the things that were done, feared exceedingly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God. 27:55And many women were there beholding from afar, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him: 27:56among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
27:57And when even was come, there came a rich man from Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple: 27:58this man went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded it to be given up. 27:59And Joseph took the body, and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 27:60and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and departed. 27:61And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.
27:62Now on the morrow, which is the day after the Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees were gathered together unto Pilate, 27:63saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said while he was yet alive, After three days I rise again. 27:64Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest haply his disciples come and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: and the last error will be worse than the first. 27:65Pilate said unto them, Ye have a guard: go, make it as sure as ye can. 27:66So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, the guard being with them.
