6:1And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah: and Jehovah delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years. 6:2And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of Midian the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds. 6:3And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east; they came up against them; 6:4and they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance in Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass. 6:5For they came up with their cattle and their tents; they came in as locusts for multitude; both they and their camels were without number: and they came into the land to destroy it. 6:6And Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah.
6:7And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah because of Midian, 6:8that Jehovah sent a prophet unto the children of Israel: and he said unto them, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage; 6:9and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land; 6:10and I said unto you, I am Jehovah your God; ye shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell. But ye have not hearkened unto my voice.
6:11And the angel of Jehovah came, and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites. 6:12And the angel of Jehovah appeared unto him, and said unto him, Jehovah is with thee, thou mighty man of valor. 6:13And Gideon said unto him, Oh, my lord, if Jehovah is with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not Jehovah bring us up from Egypt? but now Jehovah hath cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian. 6:14And Jehovah looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian: have not I sent thee? 6:15And he said unto him, Oh, Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house. 6:16And Jehovah said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man. 6:17And he said unto him, If now I have found favor in thy sight, then show me a sign that it is thou that talkest with me. 6:18Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and lay it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.
6:19And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of meal: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it. 6:20And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so. 6:21Then the angel of Jehovah put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there went up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of Jehovah departed out of his sight. 6:22And Gideon saw that he was the angel of Jehovah; and Gideon said, Alas, O Lord Jehovah! forasmuch as I have seen the angel of Jehovah face to face. 6:23And Jehovah said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die. 6:24Then Gideon built an altar there unto Jehovah, and called it Jehovah-shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
6:25And it came to pass the same night, that Jehovah said unto him, Take thy father's bullock, even the second bullock seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the Asherah that is by it; 6:26and build an altar unto Jehovah thy God upon the top of this stronghold, in the orderly manner, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt-offering with the wood of the Asherah which thou shalt cut down. 6:27Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as Jehovah had spoken unto him: and it came to pass, because he feared his father's household and the men of the city, so that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.
6:28And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built. 6:29And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they inquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing. 6:30Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die, because he hath broken down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the Asherah that was by it. 6:31And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye contend for Baal? Or will ye save him? he that will contend for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him contend for himself, because one hath broken down his altar. 6:32Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal contend against him, because he hath broken down his altar.
6:33Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east assembled themselves together; and they passed over, and encamped in the valley of Jezreel. 6:34But the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Gideon; and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered together after him. 6:35And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they also were gathered together after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.
6:36And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast spoken, 6:37behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing-floor; if there be dew on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the ground, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast spoken. 6:38And it was so; for he rose up early on the morrow, and pressed the fleece together, and wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowlful of water. 6:39And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once: let me make trial, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew. 6:40And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.
10:1Now there was a certain man in Caesarea, Cornelius by name, a centurion of the band called the Italian band, 10:2a devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, who gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God always. 10:3He saw in a vision openly, as it were about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming in unto him, and saying to him, Cornelius. 10:4And he, fastening his eyes upon him, and being affrighted, said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are gone up for a memorial before God. 10:5And now send men to Joppa, and fetch one Simon, who is surnamed Peter: 10:6he lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side. 10:7And when the angel that spake unto him was departed, he called two of his household-servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually; 10:8and having rehearsed all things unto them, he sent them to Joppa. 10:9Now on the morrow, as they were on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour: 10:10and he became hungry, and desired to eat: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance; 10:11and he beholdeth the heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending, as it were a great sheet, let down by four corners upon the earth: 10:12wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts and creeping things of the earth and birds of the heaven. 10:13And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill and eat. 10:14But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common and unclean. 10:15And a voice came unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, make not thou common. 10:16And this was done thrice: and straightway the vessel was received up into heaven. 10:17Now while Peter was much perplexed in himself what the vision which he had seen might mean, behold, the men that were sent by Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simon's house, stood before the gate, 10:18and called and asked whether Simon, who was surnamed Peter, were lodging there. 10:19And while Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee. 10:20But arise, and get thee down, and go with them, nothing doubting: for I have sent them. 10:21And Peter went down to the men, and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come? 10:22And they said, Cornelius a centurion, a righteous man and one that feareth God, and well reported of by all the nation of the Jews, was warned of God by a holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words from thee. 10:23So he called them in and lodged them. And on the morrow he arose and went forth with them, and certain of the brethren from Joppa accompanied him. 10:24And on the morrow they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius was waiting for them, having called together his kinsmen and his near friends. 10:25And when it came to pass that Peter entered, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him. 10:26But Peter raised him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man. 10:27And as he talked with him, he went in, and findeth many come together: 10:28and he said unto them, Ye yourselves know how it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to join himself or come unto one of another nation; and yet unto me hath God showed that I should not call any man common or unclean: 10:29wherefore also I came without gainsaying, when I was sent for. I ask therefore with what intent ye sent for me. 10:30And Cornelius said, Four days ago, until this hour, I was keeping the ninth hour of prayer in my house; and behold, a man stood before me in bright apparel, 10:31and saith, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God. 10:32Send therefore to Joppa, and call unto thee Simon, who is surnamed Peter; he lodgeth in the house of Simon a tanner, by the sea side. 10:33Forthwith therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore we are all here present in the sight of God, to hear all things that have been commanded thee of the Lord. 10:34And Peter opened his mouth and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: 10:35but in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is acceptable to him. 10:36The word which he sent unto the children of Israel, preaching good tidings of peace by Jesus Christ (He is Lord of all.) -- 10:37that saying ye yourselves know, which was published throughout all Judaea, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; 10:38even Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. 10:39And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the country of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom also they slew, hanging him on a tree. 10:40Him God raised up the third day, and gave him to be made manifest, 10:41not to all the people, but unto witnesses that were chosen before of God, even to us, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 10:42And he charged us to preach unto the people, and to testify that this is he who is ordained of God to be the Judge of the living and the dead. 10:43To him bear all the prophets witness, that through his name every one that believeth on him shall receive remission of sins. 10:44While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all them that heard the word. 10:45And they of the circumcision that believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit. 10:46For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, 10:47Can any man forbid the water, that these should not be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit as well as we? 10:48And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
19:1Thus said Jehovah, Go, and buy a potter's earthen bottle, and take of the elders of the people, and of the elders of the priests; 19:2and go forth unto the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the gate Harsith, and proclaim there the words that I shall tell thee; 19:3and say, Hear ye the word of Jehovah, O kings of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem: thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, which whosoever heareth, his ears shall tingle. 19:4Because they have forsaken me, and have estranged this place, and have burned incense in it unto other gods, that they knew not, they and their fathers and the kings of Judah; and have filled this place with the blood of innocents, 19:5and have built the high places of Baal, to burn their sons in the fire for burnt-offerings unto Baal; which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind: 19:6therefore, behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that this place shall no more be called Topheth, nor The valley of the son of Hinnom, but The valley of Slaughter. 19:7And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place; and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hand of them that seek their life: and their dead bodies will I give to be food for the birds of the heavens, and for the beasts of the earth. 19:8And I will make this city an astonishment, and a hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof. 19:9And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters; and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend, in the siege and in the distress, wherewith their enemies, and they that seek their life, shall distress them. 19:10Then shalt thou break the bottle in the sight of the men that go with thee, 19:11and shalt say unto them, Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a potter's vessel, that cannot be made whole again; and they shall bury in Topheth, till there be no place to bury. 19:12Thus will I do unto this place, saith Jehovah, and to the inhabitants thereof, even making this city as Topheth: 19:13and the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings of Judah, which are defiled, shall be as the place of Topheth, even all the houses upon whose roofs they have burned incense unto all the host of heaven, and have poured out drink-offerings unto other gods. 19:14Then came Jeremiah from Topheth, whither Jehovah had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in the court of Jehovah's house, and said to all the people: 19:15Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, Behold, I will bring upon this city and upon all its towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it; because they have made their neck stiff, that they may not hear my words.
5:1And they came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gerasenes. 5:2And when he was come out of the boat, straightway there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, 5:3who had his dwelling in the tombs: and no man could any more bind him, no, not with a chain; 5:4because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been rent asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: and no man had strength to tame him. 5:5And always, night and day, in the tombs and in the mountains, he was crying out, and cutting himself with stones. 5:6And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshipped him; 5:7and crying out with a loud voice, he saith, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the Most High God? I adjure thee by God, torment me not. 5:8For he said unto him, Come forth, thou unclean spirit, out of the man. 5:9And he asked him, What is thy name? And he saith unto him, My name is Legion; for we are many. 5:10And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. 5:11Now there was there on the mountain side a great herd of swine feeding. 5:12And they besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. 5:13And he gave them leave. And the unclean spirits came out, and entered into the swine: and the herd rushed down the steep into the sea, in number about two thousand; and they were drowned in the sea. 5:14And they that fed them fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they came to see what it was that had come to pass. 5:15And they come to Jesus, and behold him that was possessed with demons sitting, clothed and in his right mind, even him that had the legion: and they were afraid. 5:16And they that saw it declared unto them how it befell him that was possessed with demons, and concerning the swine. 5:17And they began to beseech him to depart from their borders. 5:18And as he was entering into the boat, he that had been possessed with demons besought him that he might be with him. 5:19And he suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go to thy house unto thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and how he had mercy on thee. 5:20And he went his way, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men marvelled. 5:21And when Jesus had crossed over again in the boat unto the other side, a great multitude was gathered unto him; and he was by the sea. 5:22And there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and seeing him, he falleth at his feet, 5:23and beseecheth him much, saying, My little daughter is at the point of death: I pray thee, that thou come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be made whole, and live. 5:24And he went with him; and a great multitude followed him, and they thronged him. 5:25And a woman, who had an issue of blood twelve years, 5:26and had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, 5:27having heard the things concerning Jesus, came in the crowd behind, and touched his garment. 5:28For she said, If I touch but his garments, I shall be made whole. 5:29And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her plague. 5:30And straightway Jesus, perceiving in himself that the power proceeding from him had gone forth, turned him about in the crowd, and said, Who touched my garments? 5:31And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? 5:32And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing. 5:33But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what had been done to her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. 5:34And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague. 5:35While he yet spake, they come from the ruler of the synagogue's house saying, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Teacher any further? 5:36But Jesus, not heeding the word spoken, saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Fear not, only believe. 5:37And he suffered no man to follow with him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James. 5:38And they come to the house of the ruler of the synagogue; and he beholdeth a tumult, and many weeping and wailing greatly. 5:39And when he was entered in, he saith unto them, Why make ye a tumult, and weep? the child is not dead, but sleepeth. 5:40And they laughed him to scorn. But he, having put them all forth, taketh the father of the child and her mother and them that were with him, and goeth in where the child was. 5:41And taking the child by the hand, he saith unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, Arise. 5:42And straightway the damsel rose up, and walked; for she was twelve years old. And they were amazed straightway with a great amazement. 5:43And he charged them much that no man should know this: and he commanded that something should be given her to eat.
