Judges

8:1And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with Midian? And they did chide with him sharply. 8:2And he said unto them, What have I now done in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer? 8:3God hath delivered into your hand the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison with you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.

8:4And Gideon came to the Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing. 8:5And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they are faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian. 8:6And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we should give bread unto thine army? 8:7And Gideon said, Therefore when Jehovah hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers. 8:8And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them in like manner; and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered. 8:9And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.

8:10Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the host of the children of the east; for there fell a hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword. 8:11And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host; for the host was secure. 8:12And Zebah and Zalmunna fled; and he pursued after them; and he took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.

8:13And Gideon the son of Joash returned from the battle from the ascent of Heres. 8:14And he caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he described for him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, seventy and seven men. 8:15And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, concerning whom ye did taunt me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary? 8:16And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth. 8:17And he brake down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.

8:18Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king. 8:19And he said, They were my brethren, the sons of my mother: as Jehovah liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you. 8:20And he said unto Jether his first-born, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword; for he feared, because he was yet a youth. 8:21Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us; for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescents that were on their camels' necks.

8:22Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son also; for thou hast saved us out of the hand of Midian. 8:23And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: Jehovah shall rule over you. 8:24And Gideon said unto them, I would make a request of you, that ye would give me every man the ear-rings of his spoil. (For they had golden ear-rings, because they were Ishmaelites.) 8:25And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the ear-rings of his spoil. 8:26And the weight of the golden ear-rings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold, besides the crescents, and the pendants, and the purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and besides the chains that were about their camels' necks. 8:27And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel played the harlot after it there; and it became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house. 8:28So Midian was subdued before the children of Israel, and they lifted up their heads no more. And the land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon.

8:29And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house. 8:30And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten; for he had many wives. 8:31And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, and he called his name Abimelech. 8:32And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

8:33And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and played the harlot after the Baalim, and made Baal-berith their god. 8:34And the children of Israel remembered not Jehovah their God, who had delivered them out of the hand of all their enemies on every side; 8:35neither showed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had showed unto Israel.

The Acts of the Apostles

12:1Now about that time Herod the king put forth his hands to afflict certain of the church. 12:2And he killed James the brother of John with the sword. 12:3And when he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. And those were the days of unleavened bread. 12:4And when he had taken him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to guard him; intending after the Passover to bring him forth to the people. 12:5Peter therefore was kept in the prison: but prayer was made earnestly of the church unto God for him. 12:6And when Herod was about to bring him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and guards before the door kept the prison. 12:7And behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shined in the cell: and he smote Peter on the side, and awoke him, saying, Rise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands. 12:8And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And he did so. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me. 12:9And he went out, and followed; and he knew not that it was true which was done by the angel, but thought he saw a vision. 12:10And when they were past the first and the second guard, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth into the city; which opened to them of its own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and straightway the angel departed from him. 12:11And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a truth, that the Lord hath sent forth his angel and delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews. 12:12And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together and were praying. 12:13And when he knocked at the door of the gate, a maid came to answer, named Rhoda. 12:14And when she knew Peter's voice, she opened not the gate for joy, but ran in, and told that Peter stood before the gate. 12:15And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she confidently affirmed that it was even so. And they said, It is his angel. 12:16But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened, they saw him, and were amazed. 12:17But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him forth out of the prison. And he said, Tell these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went to another place. 12:18Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter. 12:19And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the guards, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea, and tarried there. 12:20Now he was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: and they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king's chamberlain their friend, they asked for peace, because their country was fed from the king's country. 12:21And upon a set day Herod arrayed himself in royal apparel, and sat on the throne, and made an oration unto them. 12:22And the people shouted, saying, The voice of a god, and not of a man. 12:23And immediately an angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost. 12:24But the word of God grew and multiplied. 12:25And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministration, taking with them John whose surname was Mark.

Jeremiah

21:1The word which came unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, when king Zedekiah sent unto him Pashhur the son of Malchijah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, saying, 21:2Inquire, I pray thee, of Jehovah for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon maketh war against us: peradventure Jehovah will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may go up from us. 21:3Then said Jeremiah unto them, Thus shall ye say to Zedekiah: 21:4Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands, wherewith ye fight against the king of Babylon, and against the Chaldeans that besiege you, without the walls; and I will gather them into the midst of this city. 21:5And I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation. 21:6And I will smite the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast: they shall die of a great pestilence. 21:7And afterward, saith Jehovah, I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah, and his servants, and the people, even such as are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those that seek their life: and he shall smite them with the edge of the sword; he shall not spare them, neither have pity, nor have mercy. 21:8And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death. 21:9He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence; but he that goeth out, and passeth over to the Chaldeans that besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey. 21:10For I have set my face upon this city for evil, and not for good, saith Jehovah: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire. 21:11And touching the house of the king of Judah, hear ye the word of Jehovah: 21:12O house of David, thus saith Jehovah, Execute justice in the morning, and deliver him that is robbed out of the hand of the oppressor, lest my wrath go forth like fire, and burn so that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings. 21:13Behold, I am against thee, O inhabitant of the valley, and of the rock of the plain, saith Jehovah; you that say, Who shall come down against us? or who shall enter into our habitations? 21:14And I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings, saith Jehovah; and I will kindle a fire in her forest, and it shall devour all that is round about her.

Mark

7:1And there are gathered together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, who had come from Jerusalem, 7:2and had seen that some of his disciples ate their bread with defiled, that is, unwashen, hands. 7:3(For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands diligently, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders; 7:4and when they come from the market-place, except they bathe themselves, they eat not; and many other things there are, which they have received to hold, washings of cups, and pots, and brasen vessels.) 7:5And the Pharisees and the scribes ask him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with defiled hands? 7:6And he said unto them, Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written,

This people honoreth me with their lips,

But their heart is far from me.

7:7But in vain do they worship me,

Teaching as their doctrines the precepts of men.

7:8Ye leave the commandment of God, and hold fast the tradition of men. 7:9And he said unto them, Full well do ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your tradition. 7:10For Moses said, Honor thy father and thy mother; and, He that speaketh evil of father or mother, let him die the death: 7:11but ye say, If a man shall say to his father or his mother, That wherewith thou mightest have been profited by me is Corban, that is to say, Given to God; 7:12ye no longer suffer him to do aught for his father or his mother; 7:13making void the word of God by your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things ye do. 7:14And he called to him the multitude again, and said unto them, Hear me all of you, and understand: 7:15there is nothing from without the man, that going into him can defile him; but the things which proceed out of the man are those that defile the man. 7:16If any man hath ears to hear, let him hear. 7:17And when he was entered into the house from the multitude, his disciples asked of him the parable. 7:18And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Perceive ye not, that whatsoever from without goeth into the man, it cannot defile him; 7:19because it goeth not into his heart, but into his belly, and goeth out into the draught? This he said, making all meats clean. 7:20And he said, That which proceedeth out of the man, that defileth the man. 7:21For from within, out of the heart of men, evil thoughts proceed, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, 7:22covetings, wickednesses, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, railing, pride, foolishness: 7:23all these evil things proceed from within, and defile the man. 7:24And from thence he arose, and went away into the borders of Tyre and Sidon. And he entered into a house, and would have no man know it; and he could not be hid. 7:25But straightway a woman, whose little daughter had an unclean spirit, having heard of him, came and fell down at his feet. 7:26Now the woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by race. And she besought him that he would cast forth the demon out of her daughter. 7:27And he said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread and cast it to the dogs. 7:28But she answered and saith unto him, Yea, Lord; even the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs. 7:29And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the demon is gone out of thy daughter. 7:30And she went away unto her house, and found the child laid upon the bed, and the demon gone out. 7:31And again he went out from the borders of Tyre, and came through Sidon unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the borders of Decapolis. 7:32And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to lay his hand upon him. 7:33And he took him aside from the multitude privately, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat, and touched his tongue; 7:34and looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. 7:35And his ears were opened, and the bond of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain. 7:36And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it. 7:37And they were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well; he maketh even the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.
