Numbers

21:1And the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who dwelt in the South, heard tell that Israel came by the way of Atharim; and he fought against Israel, and took some of them captive. 21:2And Israel vowed a vow unto Jehovah, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities. 21:3And Jehovah hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and the name of the place was called Hormah.

21:4And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way. 21:5And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, and there is no water; and our soul loatheth this light bread. 21:6And Jehovah sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died. 21:7And the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, because we have spoken against Jehovah, and against thee; pray unto Jehovah, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. 21:8And Jehovah said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a standard: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he seeth it, shall live. 21:9And Moses made a serpent of brass, and set it upon the standard: and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked unto the serpent of brass, he lived.

21:10And the children of Israel journeyed, and encamped in Oboth. 21:11And they journeyed from Oboth, and encamped at Iyeabarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the sunrising. 21:12From thence they journeyed, and encamped in the valley of Zered. 21:13From thence they journeyed, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness, that cometh out of the border of the Amorites: for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. 21:14Wherefore it is said in the book of the Wars of Jehovah,

 Vaheb in Suphah,

 And the valleys of the Arnon,

 21:15And the slope of the valleys

 That inclineth toward the dwelling of Ar,

 And leaneth upon the border of Moab.

21:16And from thence they journeyed to Beer: that is the well whereof Jehovah said unto Moses, Gather the people together, and I will give them water.

21:17Then sang Israel this song:

 Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it:

 21:18The well, which the princes digged,

 Which the nobles of the people delved,

 With the sceptre, and with their staves.

And from the wilderness they journeyed to Mattanah; 21:19and from Mattanah to Nahaliel; and from Nahaliel to Bamoth; 21:20and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the field of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looketh down upon the desert.

21:21And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying, 21:22Let me pass through thy land: we will not turn aside into field, or into vineyard; we will not drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king's highway, until we have passed thy border. 21:23And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness, and came to Jahaz; and he fought against Israel. 21:24And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon unto the Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was strong. 21:25And Israel took all these cities: and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the towns thereof. 21:26For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto the Arnon. 21:27Wherefore they that speak in proverbs say,

 Come ye to Heshbon;

 Let the city of Sihon be built and established:

 21:28For a fire is gone out of Heshbon,

 A flame from the city of Sihon:

 It hath devoured Ar of Moab,

 The lords of the high places of the Arnon.

 21:29Woe to thee, Moab!

 Thou art undone, O people of Chemosh:

 He hath given his sons as fugitives,

 And his daughters into captivity,

 Unto Sihon king of the Amorites.

 21:30We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon,

 And we have laid waste even unto Nophah,

 Which reacheth unto Medeba.

21:31Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites. 21:32And Moses sent to spy out Jazer; and they took the towns thereof, and drove out the Amorites that were there.

21:33And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei. 21:34And Jehovah said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon. 21:35So they smote him, and his sons and all his people, until there was none left him remaining: and they possessed his land.

Psalms

For the Chief Musician; set to *Shushan Eduth. Michtam of David, to teach; and when he strove with Aram-naharaim and with Aram-zobah, and Joab returned, and smote of Edom in the Valley of Salt twelve thousand.

 60:1O God thou hast cast us off, thou hast broken us down;

 Thou hast been angry; oh restore us again.

 60:2Thou hast made the land to tremble; thou hast rent it:

 Heal the breaches thereof; for it shaketh.

 60:3Thou hast showed thy people hard things:

 Thou hast made us to drink the wine of staggering.

 60:4Thou hast given a banner to them that fear thee,

 That it may be displayed because of the truth.

Selah

 60:5That thy beloved may be delivered,

 Save with thy right hand, and answer us.

 60:6God hath spoken in his holiness: I will exult;

 I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth.

 60:7Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine;

 Ephraim also is the defence of my head;

 Judah is my sceptre.

 60:8Moab is my washpot;

 Upon Edom will I cast my shoe:

 Philistia, shout thou because of me.

 60:9Who will bring me into the strong city?

 Who hath led me unto Edom?

 60:10Hast not thou, O God, cast us off?

 And thou goest not forth, O God, with our hosts.

 60:11Give us help against the adversary;

 For vain is the help of man.

 60:12Through God we shall do valiantly;

 For he it is that will tread down our adversaries.

Psalm 61

For the Chief Musician; on a stringed instrument. A Psalm of David.

 61:1Hear my cry, O God;

 Attend unto my prayer.

 61:2From the end of the earth will I call unto thee, when my heart *is overwhelmed:

 Lead me to *the rock that is higher than I.

 61:3For thou hast been a refuge for me,

 A strong tower from the enemy.

 61:4I will dwell in thy tabernacle for ever:

 I will take refuge in the covert of thy wings.

Selah

 61:5For thou, O God, hast heard my vows:

 Thou hast given me the heritage of those that fear thy name.

 61:6Thou wilt prolong the king's life;

 His years shall be as many generations.

 61:7He shall abide before God for ever:

 Oh prepare lovingkindness and truth, that they may preserve him.

 61:8So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever,

 That I may daily perform my vows.

Isaiah

10:5Ho Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, the staff in whose hand is mine indignation! 10:6I will send him against a profane nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets. 10:7Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy, and to cut off nations not a few. 10:8For he saith, Are not my princes all of them kings? 10:9Is not Calno as Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad? is not Samaria as Damascus? 10:10As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, whose graven images did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria; 10:11shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols? 10:12Wherefore it shall come to pass, that, when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks. 10:13For he hath said, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I have understanding: and I have removed the bounds of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and like a valiant man I have brought down them that sit on thrones: 10:14and my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the peoples; and as one gathereth eggs that are forsaken, have I gathered all the earth: and there was none that moved the wing, or that opened the mouth, or chirped. 10:15Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? shall the saw magnify itself against him that wieldeth it? as if a rod should wield them that lift it up, or as if a staff should lift up him that is not wood. 10:16Therefore will the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory there shall be kindled a burning like the burning of fire. 10:17And the light of Israel will be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame; and it will burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day. 10:18And he will consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body: and it shall be as when a standard-bearer fainteth. 10:19And the remnant of the trees of his forest shall be few, so that a child may write them. 10:20And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and they that are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again lean upon him that smote them, but shall lean upon Jehovah, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. 10:21A remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God. 10:22For though thy people, Israel, be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them shall return: a destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness. 10:23For a full end, and that determined, will the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, make in the midst of all the earth. 10:24Therefore thus saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, O my people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian, though he smite thee with the rod, and lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt. 10:25For yet a very little while, and the indignation against thee shall be accomplished, and mine anger shall be directed to his destruction. 10:26And Jehovah of hosts will stir up against him a scourge, as in the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb: and his rod will be over the sea, and he will lift it up after the manner of Egypt. 10:27And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall depart from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed by reason of fatness. 10:28He is come to Aiath, he is passed through Migron; at Michmash he layeth up his baggage; 10:29they are gone over the pass; they have taken up their lodging at Geba; Ramah trembleth; Gibeah of Saul is fled. 10:30Cry aloud with thy voice, O daughter of Gallim! hearken, O Laishah! O thou poor Anathoth! 10:31Madmenah is a fugitive; the inhabitants of Gebim flee for safety. 10:32This very day shall he halt at Nob: he shaketh his hand at the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem. 10:33Behold, the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, will lop the boughs with terror: and the high of stature shall be hewn down, and the lofty shall be brought low. 10:34And he will cut down the thickets of the forest with iron, and Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one.

James

4:1Whence come wars and whence come fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your pleasures that war in your members? 4:2Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and covet, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war; ye have not, because ye ask not. 4:3Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may spend it in your pleasures. 4:4Ye adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore would be a friend of the world maketh himself an enemy of God. 4:5Or think ye that the scripture speaketh in vain? Doth the spirit which he made to dwell in us long unto envying? 4:6But he giveth more grace. Wherefore the scripture saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble. 4:7Be subject therefore unto God; but resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 4:8Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye doubleminded. 4:9Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 4:10Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall exalt you. 4:11Speak not one against another, brethren. He that speaketh against a brother, or judgeth his brother, speaketh against the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judgest the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. 4:12One only is the lawgiver and judge, even he who is able to save and to destroy: but who art thou that judgest thy neighbor? 4:13Come now, ye that say, To-day or to-morrow we will go into this city, and spend a year there, and trade, and get gain: 4:14whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. What is your life? For ye are a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 4:15For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall both live, and do this or that. 4:16But now ye glory in your vauntings: all such glorying is evil. 4:17To him therefore that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
