22:1Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign; and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath. 22:2And he did that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left.
22:3And it came to pass in the eighteenth year of king Josiah, that the king sent Shaphan, the son of Azaliah the son of Meshullam, the scribe, to the house of Jehovah, saying, 22:4Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may sum the money which is brought into the house of Jehovah, which the keepers of the threshold have gathered of the people: 22:5and let them deliver it into the hand of the workmen that have the oversight of the house of Jehovah; and let them give it to the workmen that are in the house of Jehovah, to repair the breaches of the house, 22:6unto the carpenters, and to the builders, and to the masons, and for buying timber and hewn stone to repair the house. 22:7Howbeit there was no reckoning made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand; for they dealt faithfully.
22:8And Hilkiah the high priest said unto Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of Jehovah. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan, and he read it. 22:9And Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, Thy servants have emptied out the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of the workmen that have the oversight of the house of Jehovah. 22:10And Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath delivered me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king. 22:11And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the book of the law, that he rent his clothes. 22:12And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Micaiah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king's servant, saying, 22:13Go ye, inquire of Jehovah for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found; for great is the wrath of Jehovah that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not hearkened unto the words of this book, to do according unto all that which is written concerning us.
22:14So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asaiah, went unto Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the second quarter); and they communed with her. 22:15And she said unto them, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel: Tell ye the man that sent you unto me, 22:16Thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah hath read. 22:17Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and it shall not be quenched. 22:18But unto the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of Jehovah, thus shall ye say to him, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel: As touching the words which thou hast heard, 22:19because thy heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before Jehovah, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith Jehovah. 22:20Therefore, behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.
4:1Let us fear therefore, lest haply, a promise being left of entering into his rest, any one of you should seem to have come short of it. 4:2For indeed we have had good tidings preached unto us, even as also they: but the word of hearing did not profit them, because it was not united by faith with them that heard. 4:3For we who have believed do enter into that rest; even as he hath said,
As I sware in my wrath,
They shall not enter into my rest:
although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4:4For he hath said somewhere of the seventh day on this wise, And God rested on the seventh day from all his works; 4:5and in this place again,
They shall not enter into my rest.
4:6Seeing therefore it remaineth that some should enter thereinto, and they to whom the good tidings were before preached failed to enter in because of disobedience, 4:7he again defineth a certain day, To-day, saying in David so long a time afterward (even as hath been said before),
To-day if ye shall hear his voice,
Harden not your hearts.
4:8For if Joshua had given them rest, he would not have spoken afterward of another day. 4:9There remaineth therefore a sabbath rest for the people of God. 4:10For he that is entered into his rest hath himself also rested from his works, as God did from his. 4:11Let us therefore give diligence to enter into that rest, that no man fall after the same example of disobedience. 4:12For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and quick to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart. 4:13And there is no creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him with whom we have to do. 4:14Having then a great high priest, who hath passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 4:15For we have not a high priest that cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but one that hath been in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 4:16Let us therefore draw near with boldness unto the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace to help us in time of need.
1:1The word of Jehovah that came to Joel the son of Pethuel. 1:2Hear this, ye old men, and give ear, all ye inhabitants of the land. Hath this been in your days, or in the days of your fathers? 1:3Tell ye your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation. 1:4That which the palmer-worm hath left hath the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the canker-worm eaten; and that which the canker-worm hath left hath the caterpillar eaten. 1:5Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and wail, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine; for it is cut off from your mouth. 1:6For a nation is come up upon my land, strong, and without number; his teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the jaw-teeth of a lioness. 1:7He hath laid my vine waste, and barked my fig-tree: he hath made it clean bare, and cast it away; the branches thereof are made white. 1:8Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth. 1:9The meal-offering and the drink-offering are cut off from the house of Jehovah; the priests, Jehovah's ministers, mourn. 1:10The field is laid waste, the land mourneth; for the grain is destroyed, the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth. 1:11Be confounded, O ye husbandmen, wail, O ye vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley; for the harvest of the field is perished. 1:12The vine is withered, and the fig-tree languisheth; the pomegranate-tree, the palm-tree also, and the apple-tree, even all the trees of the field are withered: for joy is withered away from the sons of men. 1:13Gird yourselves with sackcloth, and lament, ye priests; wail, ye ministers of the altar; come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meal-offering and the drink-offering are withholden from the house of your God. 1:14Sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the old men and all the inhabitants of the land unto the house of Jehovah your God, and cry unto Jehovah. 1:15Alas for the day! for the day of Jehovah is at hand, and as destruction from the Almighty shall it come. 1:16Is not the food cut off before our eyes, yea, joy and gladness from the house of our God? 1:17The seeds rot under their clods; the garners are laid desolate, the barns are broken down; for the grain is withered. 1:18How do the beasts groan! the herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture; yea, the flocks of sheep are made desolate. 1:19O Jehovah, to thee do I cry; for the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned all the trees of the field. 1:20Yea, the beasts of the field pant unto thee; for the water brooks are dried up, and the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness.

140:1Deliver me, O Jehovah, from the evil man;
Preserve me from the violent man:
140:2Who devise mischiefs in their heart;
Continually do they gather themselves together for war.

140:12I know that Jehovah will maintain the cause of the afflicted,
And justice for the needy.

141:1Jehovah, I have called upon thee; make haste unto me:
Give ear unto my voice, when I call unto thee.
141:2Let my prayer be set forth as incense before thee;
The lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
141:3Set a watch, O Jehovah, before my mouth;
Keep the door of my lips.
141:4Incline not my heart to any evil thing,
To practise deeds of wickedness
With men that work iniquity:
And let me not eat of their dainties.
141:5Let the righteous smite me, it shall be a kindness;
And let him reprove me, it shall be as oil upon the head;
Let not my head refuse it:
For even in their wickedness shall my prayer continue.
141:6Their judges are thrown down by the sides of the rock;
And they shall hear my words; for they are sweet.
141:7As when one ploweth and cleaveth the earth,
Our bones are scattered at the mouth of Sheol.
141:8For mine eyes are unto thee, O Jehovah the Lord:
In thee do I take refuge; leave not my soul destitute.
141:9Keep me from the snare which they have laid for me,
And from the gins of the workers of iniquity.
