22:1And they continued three years without war between Syria and Israel. 22:2And it came to pass in the third year, that Jehoshaphat the king of Judah came down to the king of Israel. 22:3And the king of Israel said unto his servants, Know ye that Ramoth-gilead is ours, and we are still, and take it not out of the hand of the king of Syria? 22:4And he said unto Jehoshaphat, Wilt thou go with me to battle to Ramoth-gilead? And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, I am as thou art, my people as thy people, my horses as thy horses.
22:5And Jehoshaphat said unto the king of Israel, Inquire first, I pray thee, for the word of Jehovah. 22:6Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, about four hundred men, and said unto them, Shall I go against Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall I forbear? And they said, Go up; for the Lord will deliver it into the hand of the king. 22:7But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of Jehovah besides, that we may inquire of him? 22:8And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, there is yet one man by whom we may inquire of Jehovah, Micaiah the son of Imlah: but I hate him; for he doth not prophesy good concerning me, but evil. And Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so. 22:9Then the king of Israel called an officer, and said, Fetch quickly Micaiah the son of Imlah. 22:10Now the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah were sitting each on his throne, arrayed in their robes, in an open place at the entrance of the gate of Samaria; and all the prophets were prophesying before them. 22:11And Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made him horns of iron, and said, Thus saith Jehovah, With these shalt thou push the Syrians, until they be consumed. 22:12And all the prophets prophesied so, saying, Go up to Ramoth-gilead, and prosper; for Jehovah will deliver it into the hand of the king.
22:13And the messenger that went to call Micaiah spake unto him, saying, Behold now, the words of the prophets declare good unto the king with one mouth: let thy word, I pray thee, be like the word of one of them, and speak thou good. 22:14And Micaiah said, As Jehovah liveth, what Jehovah saith unto me, that will I speak. 22:15And when he was come to the king, the king said unto him, Micaiah, shall we go to Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall we forbear? And he answered him, Go up and prosper; and Jehovah will deliver it into the hand of the king. 22:16And the king said unto him, How many times shall I adjure thee that thou speak unto me nothing but the truth in the name of Jehovah? 22:17And he said, I saw all Israel scattered upon the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd: and Jehovah said, These have no master; let them return every man to his house in peace. 22:18And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, Did I not tell thee that he would not prophesy good concerning me, but evil? 22:19And Micaiah said, Therefore hear thou the word of Jehovah: I saw Jehovah sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing by him on his right hand and on his left. 22:20And Jehovah said, Who shall entice Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead? And one said on this manner; and another said on that manner. 22:21And there came forth a spirit, and stood before Jehovah, and said, I will entice him. 22:22And Jehovah said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt entice him, and shalt prevail also: go forth, and do so. 22:23Now therefore, behold, Jehovah hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets; and Jehovah hath spoken evil concerning thee.
22:24Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near, and smote Micaiah on the cheek, and said, Which way went the Spirit of Jehovah from me to speak unto thee? 22:25And Micaiah said, Behold, thou shalt see on that day, when thou shalt go into an inner chamber to hide thyself. 22:26And the king of Israel said, Take Micaiah, and carry him back unto Amon the governor of the city, and to Joash the king's son; 22:27and say, Thus saith the king, Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction, until I come in peace. 22:28And Micaiah said, If thou return at all in peace, Jehovah hath not spoken by me. And he said, Hear, ye peoples, all of you.
22:29So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to Ramoth-gilead. 22:30And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, I will disguise myself, and go into the battle; but put thou on thy robes. And the king of Israel disguised himself, and went into the battle. 22:31Now the king of Syria had commanded the thirty and two captains of his chariots, saying, Fight neither with small nor great, save only with the king of Israel. 22:32And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, that they said, Surely it is the king of Israel; and they turned aside to fight against him: and Jehoshaphat cried out. 22:33And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw that it was not the king of Israel, that they turned back from pursuing him. 22:34And a certain man drew his bow at a venture, and smote the king of Israel between the joints of the armor: wherefore he said unto the driver of his chariot, Turn thy hand, and carry me out of the host; for I am sore wounded. 22:35And the battle increased that day: and the king was stayed up in his chariot against the Syrians, and died at even; and the blood ran out of the wound into the bottom of the chariot. 22:36And there went a cry throughout the host about the going down of the sun, saying, Every man to his city, and every man to his country.
22:37So the king died, and was brought to Samaria; and they buried the king in Samaria. 22:38And they washed the chariot by the pool of Samaria; and the dogs licked up his blood (now the harlots washed themselves there); according unto the word of Jehovah which he spake. 22:39Now the rest of the acts of Ahab, and all that he did, and the ivory house which he built, and all the cities that he built, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? 22:40So Ahab slept with his fathers; and Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead.
22:41And Jehoshaphat the son of Asa began to reign over Judah in the fourth year of Ahab king of Israel. 22:42Jehoshaphat was thirty and five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi. 22:43And he walked in all the way of Asa his father; He turned not aside from it, doing that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah: howbeit the high places were not taken away; the people still sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places. 22:44And Jehoshaphat made peace with the king of Israel.
22:45Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, and his might that he showed, and how he warred, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? 22:46And the remnant of the sodomites, that remained in the days of his father Asa, he put away out of the land. 22:47And there was no king in Edom: a deputy was king. 22:48Jehoshaphat made ships of Tarshish to go to Ophir for gold: but they went not; for the ships were broken at Ezion-geber. 22:49Then said Ahaziah the son of Ahab unto Jehoshaphat, Let my servants go with thy servants in the ships. But Jehoshaphat would not. 22:50And Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father; And Jehoram his son reigned in his stead.
22:51Ahaziah the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria in the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned two years over Israel. 22:52And he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and walked in the way of his father, and in the way of his mother, and in the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, wherein he made Israel to sin. 22:53And he served Baal, and worshipped him, and provoked to anger Jehovah, the God of Israel, according to all that his father had done.
5:1But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that aught be written unto you. 5:2For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. 5:3When they are saying, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall in no wise escape. 5:4But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief: 5:5for ye are all sons of light, and sons of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness; 5:6so then let us not sleep, as do the rest, but let us watch and be sober. 5:7For they that sleep sleep in the night: and they that are drunken are drunken in the night. 5:8But let us, since we are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation. 5:9For God appointed us not into wrath, but unto the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 5:10who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. 5:11Wherefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as also ye do. 5:12But we beseech you, brethren, to know them that labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; 5:13and to esteem them exceeding highly in love for their work's sake. Be at peace among yourselves. 5:14And we exhort you, brethren, admonish the disorderly, encourage the fainthearted, support the weak, be longsuffering toward all. 5:15See that none render unto any one evil for evil; but always follow after that which is good, one toward another, and toward all. 5:16Rejoice always; 5:17pray without ceasing; 5:18in everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus to you-ward. 5:19Quench not the Spirit; 5:20despise not prophesyings; 5:21prove all things; hold fast that which is good; 5:22abstain from every form of evil. 5:23And the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved entire, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 5:24Faithful is he that calleth you, who will also do it. 5:25Brethren, pray for us. 5:26Salute all the brethren with a holy kiss. 5:27I adjure you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the brethren. 5:28The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
4:1Nebuchadnezzar the king, unto all the peoples, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied unto you. 4:2It hath seemed good unto me to show the signs and wonders that the Most High God hath wrought toward me. 4:3How great are his signs! and how mighty are his wonders! his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation. 4:4I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at rest in my house, and flourishing in my palace. 4:5I saw a dream which made me afraid; and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me. 4:6Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known unto me the interpretation of the dream. 4:7Then came in the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers; and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof. 4:8But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods: and I told the dream before him, saying, 4:9O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret troubleth thee, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation thereof. 4:10Thus were the visions of my head upon my bed: I saw, and, behold, a tree in the midst of the earth; and the height thereof was great. 4:11The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth. 4:12The leaves thereof were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was food for all: the beasts of the field had shadow under it, and the birds of the heavens dwelt in the branches thereof, and all flesh was fed from it. 4:13I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and, behold, a watcher and a holy one came down from heaven. 4:14He cried aloud, and said thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off its branches, shake off its leaves, and scatter its fruit: let the beasts get away from under it, and the fowls from its branches. 4:15Nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven: and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth: 4:16let his heart be changed from man's, and let a beast's heart be given unto him; and let seven times pass over him. 4:17The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones; to the intent that the living may know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the lowest of men. 4:18This dream I, king Nebuchadnezzar, have seen; and thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation; but thou art able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee. 4:19Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was stricken dumb for a while, and his thoughts troubled him. The king answered and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream, or the interpretation, trouble thee. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine adversaries. 4:20The tree that thou sawest, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to all the earth; 4:21whose leaves were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was food for all; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the birds of the heavens had their habitation: 4:22it is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong; for thy greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth. 4:23And whereas the king saw a watcher and a holy one coming down from heaven, and saying, Hew down the tree, and destroy it; nevertheless leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field, and let it be wet with the dew of heaven: and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him; 4:24this is the interpretation, O king, and it is the decree of the Most High, which is come upon my lord the king: 4:25that thou shalt be driven from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and thou shalt be made to eat grass as oxen, and shalt be wet with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over thee; till thou know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. 4:26And whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the roots of the tree; thy kingdom shall be sure unto thee, after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule. 4:27Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by showing mercy to the poor; if there may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity. 4:28All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar. 4:29At the end of twelve months he was walking in the royal palace of Babylon. 4:30The king spake and said, Is not this great Babylon, which I have built for the royal dwelling-place, by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty? 4:31While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken: The kingdom is departed from thee: 4:32and thou shalt be driven from men; and they dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field; thou shalt be made to eat grass as oxen; and seven times shall pass over thee; until thou know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. 4:33The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hair was grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws. 4:34And at the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the Most High, and I praised and honored him that liveth for ever; for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom from generation to generation. 4:35And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou? 4:36At the same time mine understanding returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent greatness was added unto me. 4:37Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven; for all his works are truth, and his ways justice; and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.
A Song, A Psalm of David.
108:1My heart is fixed, O God; I will sing, yea,
I will sing praises, even with my glory.
108:2Awake, psaltery and harp:
I myself will *awake right early.
108:3I will give thanks unto thee, O Jehovah, among the peoples;
And I will sing praises unto thee among the nations.
108:4For thy lovingkindness is great above the heavens;
And thy truth reacheth unto the skies.
108:5Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens,
And thy glory above all the earth.
108:6That thy beloved may be delivered,
Save with thy right hand, and answer *us.
108:7God hath spoken in his holiness: I will exult;
I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth.
108:8Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine;
Ephraim also is the defence of my head;
Judah is my *sceptre.
108:9Moab is my washpot;
*Upon Edom will I cast my shoe;
Over Philistia will I shout.
108:10Who will bring me into the fortified city?
Who *hath led me unto Edom?
108:11 *Hast not thou cast us off, O God?
And thou goest not forth, O God, with our hosts.
108:12Give us help against the adversary;
For vain is the help of man.
108:13Through God we shall do valiantly:
For he it is that will tread down our adversaries.
For the Chief Musicion. A Psalm of David.
109:1Hold not thy peace, O God of my praise;
109:2For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of deceit have they opened against me:
They have spoken *unto me with a lying tongue.
109:3They have compassed me about also with words of hatred,
And fought against me without a cause.
109:4For my love they are my adversaries:
But I give myself unto prayer.
109:5And they have *rewarded me evil for good,
And hatred for my love.
109:6Set thou a wicked man over him;
And let *an adversary stand at his right hand.
109:7When he is judged, let him come forth guilty;
And let his prayer *be turned into sin.
109:8Let his days be few;
And let another take his office.
109:9Let his children be fatherless,
And his wife a widow.
109:10Let his children be vagabonds, and beg;
And let them seek their bread *out of their desolate places.
109:11Let the extortioner *catch all that he hath;
And let strangers make spoil of his labor.
109:12Let there be none to *extend kindness unto him;
Neither let there be any to have pity on his fatherless children.
109:13Let his posterity be cut off;
In the generation following let their name be blotted out.
109:14Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with Jehovah;
And let not the sin of his mother be blotted out.
109:15Let them be before Jehovah continually,
That he may cut off the memory of them from the earth;
109:16Because he remembered not to show kindness,
But persecuted the poor and needy man,
And the broken in heart, to slay them.
109:17Yea, he loved cursing, and it came unto him;
And he delighted not in blessing, and it was far from him.
109:18He clothed himself also with cursing as with his garment,
And it came into his inward parts like water,
And like oil into his bones.
109:19Let it be unto him as the raiment wherewith he covereth himself,
And for the girdle wherewith he is girded continually.
109:20This is the reward of mine adversaries from Jehovah,
And of them that speak evil against my soul.
109:21But deal thou with me, O Jehovah the Lord, for thy name's sake:
Because thy lovingkindness is good, deliver thou me;
109:22For I am poor and needy,
And my heart is wounded within me.
109:23I am gone like the shadow when it *declineth:
I am tossed up and down as the locust.
109:24My knees *are weak through fasting;
And my flesh faileth of fatness.
109:25I am become also a reproach unto them:
When they see me, they shake their head.
109:26Help me, O Jehovah my God;
Oh save me according to thy lovingkindness:
109:27That they may know that this is thy hand;
That thou, Jehovah, hast done it.
109:28Let them curse, but bless thou:
When they arise, they shall be put to shame,
But thy servant shall rejoice.
109:29 *Let mine adversaries be clothed with dishonor,
And let them cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.
109:30I will give great thanks unto Jehovah with my mouth;
Yea, I will praise him among the multitude.
109:31For he will stand at the right hand of the needy,
To save him from them that judge his soul.
