2 Kings

10:1Now Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. And Jehu wrote letters, and sent to Samaria, unto the rulers of Jezreel, even the elders, and unto them that brought up the sons of Ahab, saying, 10:2And now as soon as this letter cometh to you, seeing your master's sons are with you, and there are with you chariots and horses, a fortified city also, and armor; 10:3look ye out the best and meetest of your master's sons, and set him on his father's throne, and fight for your master's house. 10:4But they were exceedingly afraid, and said, Behold, the two kings stood not before him: how then shall we stand? 10:5And he that was over the household, and he that was over the city, the elders also, and they that brought up the children, sent to Jehu, saying, We are thy servants, and will do all that thou shalt bid us; we will not make any man king: do thou that which is good in thine eyes. 10:6Then he wrote a letter the second time to them, saying, If ye be on my side, and if ye will hearken unto my voice, take ye the heads of the men your master's sons, and come to me to Jezreel by to-morrow this time. Now the king's sons, being seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, who brought them up. 10:7And it came to pass, when the letter came to them, that they took the king's sons, and slew them, even seventy persons, and put their heads in baskets, and sent them unto him to Jezreel. 10:8And there came a messenger, and told him, saying, They have brought the heads of the king's sons. And he said, Lay ye them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until the morning. 10:9And it came to pass in the morning, that he went out, and stood, and said to all the people, Ye are righteous: behold, I conspired against my master, and slew him; but who smote all these? 10:10Know now that there shall fall unto the earth nothing of the word of Jehovah, which Jehovah spake concerning the house of Ahab: for Jehovah hath done that which he spake by his servant Elijah. 10:11So Jehu smote all that remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men, and his familiar friends, and his priests, until he left him none remaining.

10:12And he arose and departed, and went to Samaria. And as he was at the shearing-house of the shepherds in the way, 10:13Jehu met with the brethren of Ahaziah king of Judah, and said, Who are ye? And they answered, We are the brethren of Ahaziah: and we go down to salute the children of the king and the children of the queen. 10:14And he said, Take them alive. And they took them alive, and slew them at the pit of the shearing-house, even two and forty men; neither left he any of them. 10:15And when he was departed thence, he lighted on Jehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him; and he saluted him, and said to him, Is thy heart right, as my heart is with thy heart? And Jehonadab answered, It is. If it be, give me thy hand. And he gave him his hand; and he took him up to him into the chariot. 10:16And he said, Come with me, and see my zeal for Jehovah. So they made him ride in his chariot. 10:17And when he came to Samaria, he smote all that remained unto Ahab in Samaria, till he had destroyed him, according to the word of Jehovah, which he spake to Elijah.

10:18And Jehu gathered all the people together, and said unto them, Ahab served Baal a little; but Jehu will serve him much. 10:19Now therefore call unto me all the prophets of Baal, all his worshippers, and all his priests; let none be wanting: for I have a great sacrifice to do to Baal; whosoever shall be wanting, he shall not live. But Jehu did it in subtlety, to the intent that he might destroy the worshippers of Baal. 10:20And Jehu said, Sanctify a solemn assembly for Baal. And they proclaimed it. 10:21And Jehu sent through all Israel: and all the worshippers of Baal came, so that there was not a man left that came not. And they came into the house of Baal; and the house of Baal was filled from one end to another. 10:22And he said unto him that was over the vestry, Bring forth vestments for all the worshippers of Baal. And he brought them forth vestments. 10:23And Jehu went, and Jehonadab the son of Rechab, into the house of Baal; and he said unto the worshippers of Baal, Search, and look that there be here with you none of the servants of Jehovah, but the worshippers of Baal only. 10:24And they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt-offerings. Now Jehu had appointed him fourscore men without, and said, If any of the men whom I bring into your hands escape, he that letteth him go, his life shall be for the life of him.

10:25And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt-offering, that Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, Go in, and slay them; let none come forth. And they smote them with the edge of the sword; and the guard and the captains cast them out, and went to the city of the house of Baal. 10:26And they brought forth the pillars that were in the house of Baal, and burned them. 10:27And they brake down the pillar of Baal, and brake down the house of Baal, and made it a draught-house, unto this day. 10:28Thus Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel.

10:29Howbeit from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, wherewith he made Israel to sin, Jehu departed not from after them, to wit, the golden calves that were in Beth-el, and that were in Dan. 10:30And Jehovah said unto Jehu, Because thou hast done well in executing that which is right in mine eyes, and hast done unto the house of Ahab according to all that was in my heart, thy sons of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel. 10:31But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of Jehovah, the God of Israel, with all his heart: he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, wherewith he made Israel to sin.

10:32In those days Jehovah began to cut off from Israel: and Hazael smote them in all the borders of Israel; 10:33from the Jordan eastward, all the land of Gilead, the Gadites, and the Reubenites, and the Manassites, from Aroer, which is by the valley of the Arnon, even Gilead and Bashan. 10:34Now the rest of the acts of Jehu, and all that he did, and all his might, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? 10:35And Jehu slept with his fathers; and they buried him in Samaria. And Jehoahaz his son reigned in his stead. 10:36And the time that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty and eight years.

2 Timothy

1:1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, according to the promise of the life which is in Christ Jesus, 1:2to Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 1:3I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers in a pure conscience, how unceasing is my remembrance of thee in my supplications, night and day 1:4longing to see thee, remembering thy tears, that I may be filled with joy; 1:5having been reminded of the unfeigned faith that is in thee; which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and, I am persuaded, in thee also. 1:6For which cause I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee through the laying on of my hands. 1:7For God gave us not a spirit of fearfulness; but of power and love and discipline. 1:8Be not ashamed therefore of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but suffer hardship with the gospel according to the power of God; 1:9who saved us, and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before times eternal, 1:10but hath now been manifested by the appearing of our Saviour Christ Jesus, who abolished death, and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, 1:11whereunto I was appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher. 1:12For which cause I suffer also these things: yet I am not ashamed; for I know him whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that he is able to guard that which I have committed unto him against that day. 1:13Hold the pattern of sound words which thou hast heard from me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. 1:14That good thing which was committed unto thee guard through the Holy Spirit which dwelleth in us. 1:15This thou knowest, that all that are in Asia turned away from me; of whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes. 1:16The Lord grant mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus: for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain; 1:17but, when he was in Rome, he sought me diligently, and found me 1:18(the Lord grant unto him to find mercy of the Lord in that day); and in how many things he ministered at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.

Hosea

2:1Say ye unto your brethren, Ammi; and to your sisters, Ruhamah. 2:2Contend with your mother, contend; for she is not my wife, neither am I her husband; and let her put away her whoredoms from her face, and her adulteries from between her breasts; 2:3lest I strip her naked, and set her as in the day that she was born, and make her as a wilderness, and set her like a dry land, and slay her with thirst. 2:4Yea, upon her children will I have no mercy; for they are children of whoredom; 2:5for their mother hath played the harlot; she that conceived them hath done shamefully; for she said, I will go after my lovers, that give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, mine oil and my drink. 2:6Therefore, behold, I will hedge up thy way with thorns, and I will build a wall against her, that she shall not find her paths. 2:7And she shall follow after her lovers, but she shall not overtake them; and she shall seek them, but shall not find them: then shall she say, I will go and return to my first husband; for then was it better with me than now. 2:8For she did not know that I gave her the grain, and the new wine, and the oil, and multiplied unto her silver and gold, which they used for Baal. 2:9Therefore will I take back my grain in the time thereof, and my new wine in the season thereof, and will pluck away my wool and my flax which should have covered her nakedness. 2:10And now will I uncover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers, and none shall deliver her out of my hand. 2:11I will also cause all her mirth to cease, her feasts, her new moons, and her sabbaths, and all her solemn assemblies. 2:12And I will lay waste her vines and her fig-trees, whereof she hath said, These are my hire that my lovers have given me; and I will make them a forest, and the beasts of the field shall eat them. 2:13And I will visit upon her the days of the Baalim, unto which she burned incense, when she decked herself with her earrings and her jewels, and went after her lovers, and forgat me, saith Jehovah. 2:14Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak comfortably unto her. 2:15And I will give her her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope; and she shall make answer there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt. 2:16And it shall be at that day, saith Jehovah, that thou shalt call me Ishi, and shalt call me no more Baali. 2:17For I will take away the names of the Baalim out of her mouth, and they shall no more be mentioned by their name. 2:18And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the birds of the heavens, and with the creeping things of the ground: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the land, and will make them to lie down safely. 2:19And I will betroth thee unto me for ever; yea, I will betroth thee unto me in righteousness, and in justice, and in lovingkindness, and in mercies. 2:20I will even betroth thee unto me in faithfulness; and thou shalt know Jehovah. 2:21And it shall come to pass in that day, I will answer, saith Jehovah, I will answer the heavens, and they shall answer the earth; 2:22and the earth shall answer the grain, and the new wine, and the oil; and they shall answer Jezreel. 2:23And I will sow her unto me in the earth; and I will have mercy upon her that had not obtained mercy; and I will say to them that were not my people, Thou art my people; and they shall say, Thou art my God.

Psalms

MEM.

 119:97Oh how love I thy law!

 It is my meditation all the day.

 119:98 *Thy commandments make me wiser than mine enemies;

 For they are ever with me.

 119:99I have more understanding than all my teachers;

 For thy testimonies are my meditation.

 119:100I understand more than the aged,

 Because I have kept thy precepts.

 119:101I have refrained my feet from every evil way,

 That I might observe thy word.

 119:102I have not turned aside from thine ordinances;

 For thou hast taught me.

 119:103How sweet are thy words unto my *taste!

 Yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

 119:104Through thy precepts I get understanding:

 Therefore I hate every false way.

NUN.

 119:105Thy word is a lamp unto my feet,

 And light unto my path.

 119:106I have sworn, and have confirmed it,

 That I will observe thy righteous ordinances.

 119:107I am afflicted very much:

 Quicken me, O Jehovah, according unto thy word.

 119:108Accept, I beseech thee, the freewill-offerings of my mouth, O Jehovah,

 And teach me thine ordinances.

 119:109My soul is continually in my hand;

 Yet do I not forget thy law.

 119:110The wicked have laid a snare for me;

 Yet have I not gone astray from thy precepts.

 119:111Thy testimonies have I taken as a heritage for ever;

 For they are the rejoicing of my heart.

 119:112I have inclined my heart to perform thy statutes

 For ever, even unto the end.

SAMEKH.

 119:113I hate them that are of a double mind;

 But thy law do I love.

 119:114Thou art my hiding-place and my shield:

 I hope in thy word.

 119:115Depart from me, ye evil-doers,

 That I may keep the commandments of my God.

 119:116Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live;

 And let me not be ashamed of my hope.

 119:117Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe,

 And shall have respect unto thy statutes continually.

 119:118Thou hast set at nought all them that err from thy statutes;

 For their deceit is *falsehood.

 119:119Thou *puttest away all the wicked of the earth like dross:

 Therefore I love thy testimonies.

 119:120My flesh trembleth for fear of thee;

 And I am afraid of thy judgments.
