2:1And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of Jehovah, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And Jehovah said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron. 2:2So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. 2:3And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron. 2:4And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah.
And they told David, saying, The men of Jabesh-gilead were they that buried Saul. 2:5And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of Jehovah, that ye have showed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him. 2:6And now Jehovah show lovingkindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing. 2:7Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be ye valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.
2:8Now Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul's host, had taken Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim; 2:9and he made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel. 2:10Ish-bosheth, Saul's son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David. 2:11And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
2:12And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon. 2:13And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met them by the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool. 2:14And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men, I pray thee, arise and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise. 2:15Then they arose and went over by number: twelve for Benjamin, and for Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David. 2:16And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow's side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon. 2:17And the battle was very sore that day: and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.
2:18And the three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe. 2:19And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner. 2:20Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Is it thou, Asahel? And he answered, It is I. 2:21And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armor. But Asahel would not turn aside from following him. 2:22And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother? 2:23Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him in the body, so that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.
2:24But Joab and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon. 2:25And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one band, and stood on the top of a hill. 2:26Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren? 2:27And Joab said, As God liveth, if thou hadst not spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone away, nor followed every one his brother. 2:28So Joab blew the trumpet; and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more. 2:29And Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah; and they passed over the Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and came to Mahanaim.
2:30And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David's servants nineteen men and Asahel. 2:31But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner's men, so that three hundred and threescore men died. 2:32And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Beth-lehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and the day brake upon them at Hebron.
13:1If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am become sounding brass, or a clanging cymbal. 13:2And if I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 13:3And if I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profiteth me nothing. 13:4Love suffereth long, and is kind; love envieth not; love vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 13:5doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not its own, is not provoked, taketh not account of evil; 13:6rejoiceth not in unrighteousness, but rejoiceth with the truth; 13:7beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. 13:8Love never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall be done away; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall be done away. 13:9For we know in part, and we prophesy in part; 13:10but when that which is perfect is come, that which is in part shall be done away. 13:11When I was a child, I spake as a child, I felt as a child, I thought as a child: now that I am become a man, I have put away childish things. 13:12For now we see in a mirror, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know fully even as also I was fully known. 13:13But now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; and the greatest of these is love.
11:1Moreover the Spirit lifted me up, and brought me unto the east gate of Jehovah's house, which looketh eastward: and behold, at the door of the gate five and twenty men; and I saw in the midst of them Jaazaniah the son of Azzur, and Pelatiah the son of Benaiah, princes of the people. 11:2And he said unto me, Son of man, these are the men that devise iniquity, and that give wicked counsel in this city; 11:3that say, The time is not near to build houses: this city is the caldron, and we are the flesh. 11:4Therefore prophesy against them, prophesy, O son of man. 11:5And the Spirit of Jehovah fell upon me, and he said unto me, Speak, Thus saith Jehovah: Thus have ye said, O house of Israel; for I know the things that come into your mind. 11:6Ye have multiplied your slain in this city, and ye have filled the streets thereof with the slain. 11:7Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Your slain whom ye have laid in the midst of it, they are the flesh, and this city is the caldron; but ye shall be brought forth out of the midst of it. 11:8Ye have feared the sword; and I will bring the sword upon you, saith the Lord Jehovah. 11:9And I will bring you forth out of the midst thereof, and deliver you into the hands of strangers, and will execute judgments among you. 11:10Ye shall fall by the sword; I will judge you in the border of Israel; and ye shall know that I am Jehovah. 11:11This city shall not be your caldron, neither shall ye be the flesh in the midst thereof; I will judge you in the border of Israel; 11:12and ye shall know that I am Jehovah: for ye have not walked in my statutes, neither have ye executed mine ordinances, but have done after the ordinances of the nations that are round about you. 11:13And it came to pass, when I prophesied, that Pelatiah the son of Benaiah died. Then fell I down upon my face, and cried with a loud voice, and said, Ah Lord Jehovah! wilt thou make a full end of the remnant of Israel? 11:14And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying, 11:15Son of man, thy brethren, even thy brethren, the men of thy kindred, and all the house of Israel, all of them, are they unto whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said, Get you far from Jehovah; unto us is this land given for a possession. 11:16Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Whereas I have removed them far off among the nations, and whereas I have scattered them among the countries, yet will I be to them a sanctuary for a little while in the countries where they are come. 11:17Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: I will gather you from the peoples, and assemble you out of the countries where ye have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel. 11:18And they shall come thither, and they shall take away all the detestable things thereof and all the abominations thereof from thence. 11:19And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them a heart of flesh; 11:20that they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God. 11:21But as for them whose heart walketh after the heart of their detestable things and their abominations, I will bring their way upon their own heads, saith the Lord Jehovah. 11:22Then did the cherubim lift up their wings, and the wheels were beside them; and the glory of the God of Israel was over them above. 11:23And the glory of Jehovah went up from the midst of the city, and stood upon the mountain which is on the east side of the city. 11:24And the Spirit lifted me up, and brought me in the vision by the Spirit of God into Chaldea, to them of the captivity. So the vision that I had seen went up from me. 11:25Then I spake unto them of the captivity all the things that Jehovah had showed me.
A Psalm of Asaph.
50:1The Mighty One, God, Jehovah, hath spoken,
And called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof.
50:2Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty,
God hath shined forth.
50:3Our God cometh, and doth not keep silence:
A fire devoureth before him,
And it is very tempestuous round about him.
50:4He calleth to the heavens above,
And to the earth, that he may judge his people:
50:5Gather my saints together unto me,
Those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.
50:6And the heavens shall declare his righteousness;
For God is judge himself.
Selah
50:7Hear, O my people, and I will speak;
O Israel, and I will testify unto thee:
I am God, even thy God.
50:8I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices;
And thy burnt-offerings are continually before me.
50:9I will take no bullock out of thy house,
Nor he-goats out of thy folds.
50:10For every beast of the forest is mine,
And the cattle upon a thousand hills.
50:11I know all the birds of the mountains;
And the wild beasts of the field are mine.
50:12If I were hungry, I would not tell thee;
For the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.
50:13Will I eat the flesh of bulls,
Or drink the blood of goats?
50:14Offer unto God the sacrifice of thanksgiving;
And pay thy vows unto the Most High:
50:15And call upon me in the day of trouble;
I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.
50:16But unto the wicked God saith,
What hast thou to do to declare my statutes,
And that thou hast taken my covenant in thy mouth,
50:17Seeing thou hatest instruction,
And castest my words behind thee?
50:18When thou sawest a thief, thou consentedst with him,
And hast been partaker with adulterers.
50:19Thou givest thy mouth to evil,
And thy tongue frameth deceit.
50:20Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother;
Thou slanderest thine own mother's son.
50:21These things hast thou done, and I kept silence;
Thou thoughtest that I was altogether such a one as thyself:
But I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes.
50:22Now consider this, ye that forget God,
Lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver:
50:23Whoso offereth the sacrifice of thanksgiving glorifieth me;
And to him that ordereth his way aright
Will I show the salvation of God.
