2 Samuel

16:1And when David was a little past the top of the ascent, behold, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him, with a couple of asses saddled, and upon them two hundred loaves of bread, and a hundred clusters of raisins, and a hundred of summer fruits, and a bottle of wine. 16:2And the king said unto Ziba, What meanest thou by these? And Ziba said, The asses are for the king's household to ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine, that such as are faint in the wilderness may drink. 16:3And the king said, And where is thy master's son? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he abideth at Jerusalem; for he said, To-day will the house of Israel restore me the kingdom of my father. 16:4Then said the king to Ziba, Behold, thine is all that pertaineth unto Mephibosheth. And Ziba said, I do obeisance; let me find favor in thy sight, my lord, O king.

16:5And when king David came to Bahurim, behold, there came out thence a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera; he came out, and cursed still as he came. 16:6And he cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David: and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left. 16:7And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Begone, begone, thou man of blood, and base fellow: 16:8Jehovah hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned; and Jehovah hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy son; and, behold, thou art taken in thine own mischief, because thou art a man of blood.

16:9Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray thee, and take off his head. 16:10And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? Because he curseth, and because Jehovah hath said unto him, Curse David; who then shall say, Wherefore hast thou done so? 16:11And David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, Behold, my son, who came forth from my bowels, seeketh my life: how much more may this Benjamite now do it? let him alone, and let him curse; for Jehovah hath bidden him. 16:12It may be that Jehovah will look on the wrong done unto me, and that Jehovah will requite me good for his cursing of me this day. 16:13So David and his men went by the way; and Shimei went along on the hill-side over against him, and cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast dust. 16:14And the king, and all the people that were with him, came weary; and he refreshed himself there.

16:15And Absalom, and all the people, the men of Israel, came to Jerusalem, and Ahithophel with him. 16:16And it came to pass, when Hushai the Archite, David's friend, was come unto Absalom, that Hushai said unto Absalom, Long live the king, Long live the king. 16:17And Absalom said to Hushai, Is this thy kindness to thy friend? why wentest thou not with thy friend? 16:18And Hushai said unto Absalom, Nay; but whom Jehovah, and this people, and all the men of Israel have chosen, his will I be, and with him will I abide. 16:19And again, whom should I serve? should I not serve in the presence of his son? as I have served in thy father's presence, so will I be in thy presence.

16:20Then said Absalom to Ahithophel, Give your counsel what we shall do. 16:21And Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Go in unto thy father's concubines, that he hath left to keep the house; and all Israel will hear that thou art abhorred of thy father: then will the hands of all that are with thee be strong. 16:22So they spread Absalom a tent upon the top of the house; and Absalom went in unto his father's concubines in the sight of all Israel. 16:23And the counsel of Ahithophel, which he gave in those days, was as if a man inquired at the oracle of God: so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.

2 Corinthians

9:1For as touching the ministering to the saints, it is superfluous for me to write to you: 9:2for I know your readiness, of which I glory on your behalf to them of Macedonia, that Achaia hath been prepared for a year past; and your zeal hath stirred up very many of them. 9:3But I have sent the brethren, that our glorying on your behalf may not be made void in this respect; that, even as I said, ye may be prepared: 9:4lest by any means, if there come with me any of Macedonia and find you unprepared, we (that we say not, ye) should be put to shame in this confidence. 9:5I thought it necessary therefore to entreat the brethren, that they would go before unto you, and make up beforehand your aforepromised bounty, that the same might be ready as a matter of bounty, and not of extortion. 9:6But this I say, He that soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he that soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. 9:7Let each man do according as he hath purposed in his heart: not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. 9:8And God is able to make all grace abound unto you; that ye, having always all sufficiency in everything, may abound unto every good work: 9:9as it is written,

 He hath scattered abroad, he hath given to the poor;

 His righteousness abideth for ever.

9:10And he that supplieth seed to the sower and bread for food, shall supply and multiply your seed for sowing, and increase the fruits of your righteousness: 9:11ye being enriched in everything unto all liberality, which worketh through us thanksgiving to God. 9:12For the ministration of this service not only filleth up the measure of the wants of the saints, but aboundeth also through many thanksgivings unto God; 9:13seeing that through the proving of you by this ministration they glorify God for the obedience of your confession unto the gospel of Christ, and for the liberality of your contribution unto them and unto all; 9:14while they themselves also, with supplication on your behalf, long after you by reason of the exceeding grace of God in you. 9:15Thanks be to God for his unspeakable gift.

Ezekiel

23:1The word of Jehovah came again unto me, saying, 23:2Son of man, there were two women, the daughters of one mother: 23:3and they played the harlot in Egypt; they played the harlot in their youth; there were their breasts pressed, and there was handled the bosom of their virginity. 23:4And the names of them were Oholah the elder, and Oholibah her sister: and they became mine, and they bare sons and daughters. And as for their names, Samaria is Oholah, and Jerusalem Oholibah. 23:5And Oholah played the harlot when she was mine; and she doted on her lovers, on the Assyrians her neighbors, 23:6who were clothed with blue, governors and rulers, all of them desirable young men, horsemen riding upon horses. 23:7And she bestowed her whoredoms upon them, the choicest men of Assyria all of them; and on whomsoever she doted, with all their idols she defiled herself. 23:8Neither hath she left her whoredoms since the days of Egypt; for in her youth they lay with her, and they handled the bosom of her virginity; and they poured out their whoredom upon her. 23:9Wherefore I delivered her into the hand of her lovers, into the hand of the Assyrians, upon whom she doted. 23:10These uncovered her nakedness; they took her sons and her daughters; and her they slew with the sword: and she became a byword among women; for they executed judgments upon her. 23:11And her sister Oholibah saw this, yet was she more corrupt in her doting than she, and in her whoredoms which were more than the whoredoms of her sister. 23:12She doted upon the Assyrians, governors and rulers, her neighbors, clothed most gorgeously, horsemen riding upon horses, all of them desirable young men. 23:13And I saw that she was defiled; they both took one way. 23:14And she increased her whoredoms; for she saw men portrayed upon the wall, the images of the Chaldeans portrayed with vermilion, 23:15girded with girdles upon their loins, with flowing turbans upon their heads, all of them princes to look upon, after the likeness of the Babylonians in Chaldea, the land of their nativity. 23:16And as soon as she saw them she doted upon them, and sent messengers unto them into Chaldea. 23:17And the Babylonians came to her into the bed of love, and they defiled her with their whoredom, and she was polluted with them, and her soul was alienated from them. 23:18So she uncovered her whoredoms, and uncovered her nakedness: then my soul was alienated from her, like as my soul was alienated from her sister. 23:19Yet she multiplied her whoredoms, remembering the days of her youth, wherein she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt. 23:20And she doted upon their paramours, whose flesh is as the flesh of asses, and whose issue is like the issue of horses. 23:21Thus thou calledst to remembrance the lewdness of thy youth, in the handling of thy bosom by the Egyptians for the breasts of thy youth. 23:22Therefore, O Oholibah, thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Behold, I will raise up thy lovers against thee, from whom thy soul is alienated, and I will bring them against thee on every side: 23:23the Babylonians and all the Chaldeans, Pekod and Shoa and Koa, and all the Assyrians with them; desirable young men, governors and rulers all of them, princes and men of renown, all of them riding upon horses. 23:24And they shall come against thee with weapons, chariots, and wagons, and with a company of peoples; they shall set themselves against thee with buckler and shield and helmet round about; and I will commit the judgment unto them, and they shall judge thee according to their judgments. 23:25And I will set my jealousy against thee, and they shall deal with thee in fury; they shall take away thy nose and thine ears; and thy residue shall fall by the sword: they shall take thy sons and thy daughters; and thy residue shall be devoured by the fire. 23:26They shall also strip thee of thy clothes, and take away thy fair jewels. 23:27Thus will I make thy lewdness to cease from thee, and thy whoredom brought from the land of Egypt; so that thou shalt not lift up thine eyes unto them, nor remember Egypt any more. 23:28For thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Behold, I will deliver thee into the hand of them whom thou hatest, into the hand of them from whom thy soul is alienated; 23:29and they shall deal with thee in hatred, and shall take away all thy labor, and shall leave thee naked and bare; and the nakedness of thy whoredoms shall be uncovered, both thy lewdness and thy whoredoms. 23:30These things shall be done unto thee, for that thou hast played the harlot after the nations, and because thou art polluted with their idols. 23:31Thou hast walked in the way of thy sister; therefore will I give her cup into thy hand. 23:32Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Thou shalt drink of thy sister's cup, which is deep and large; thou shalt be laughed to scorn and had in derision; it containeth much. 23:33Thou shalt be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, with the cup of astonishment and desolation, with the cup of thy sister Samaria. 23:34Thou shalt even drink it and drain it out, and thou shalt gnaw the sherds thereof, and shalt tear thy breasts; for I have spoken it, saith the Lord Jehovah. 23:35Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Because thou hast forgotten me, and cast me behind thy back, therefore bear thou also thy lewdness and thy whoredoms. 23:36Jehovah said moreover unto me: Son of man, wilt thou judge Oholah and Oholibah? then declare unto them their abominations. 23:37For they have committed adultery, and blood is in their hands; and with their idols have they committed adultery; and they have also caused their sons, whom they bare unto me, to pass through the fire unto them to be devoured. 23:38Moreover this they have done unto me: they have defiled my sanctuary in the same day, and have profaned my sabbaths. 23:39For when they had slain their children to their idols, then they came the same day into my sanctuary to profane it; and, lo, thus have they done in the midst of my house. 23:40And furthermore ye have sent for men that come from far, unto whom a messenger was sent, and, lo, they came; for whom thou didst wash thyself, paint thine eyes, and deck thyself with ornaments, 23:41and sit upon a stately bed, with a table prepared before it, whereupon thou didst set mine incense and mine oil. 23:42And the voice of a multitude being at ease was with her: and with men of the common sort were brought drunkards from the wilderness; and they put bracelets upon the hands of them twain, and beautiful crowns upon their heads. 23:43Then said I of her that was old in adulteries, Now will they play the harlot with her, and she with them. 23:44And they went in unto her, as they go in unto a harlot: so went they in unto Oholah and unto Oholibah, the lewd women. 23:45And righteous men, they shall judge them with the judgment of adulteresses, and with the judgment of women that shed blood; because they are adulteresses, and blood is in their hands. 23:46For thus saith the Lord Jehovah: I will bring up a company against them, and will give them to be tossed to and fro and robbed. 23:47And the company shall stone them with stones, and despatch them with their swords; they shall slay their sons and their daughters, and burn up their houses with fire. 23:48Thus will I cause lewdness to cease out of the land, that all women may be taught not to do after your lewdness. 23:49And they shall recompense your lewdness upon you, and ye shall bear the sins of your idols; and ye shall know that I am the Lord Jehovah.

Psalms

For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David; *to bring to remembrance.

 70:1Make haste, O God, to deliver me;

 Make haste to help me, O Jehovah.

 70:2Let them be put to shame and confounded

 That seek after my soul:

 Let them be turned backward and brought to dishonor

 That delight in my hurt.

 70:3Let them be turned back by reason of their shame

 That say, Aha, aha.

 70:4Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee;

 And let such as love thy salvation say continually,

 Let God be magnified.

 70:5But I am poor and needy;

 Make haste unto me, O God:

 Thou art my help and my deliverer;

 O Jehovah, make no tarrying.

Psalm 71

 71:1In thee, O Jehovah, do I take refuge:

 Let me never be put to shame.

 71:2Deliver me in thy righteousness, and rescue me:

 Bow down thine ear unto me, and save me.

 71:3Be thou to me a rock of habitation, whereunto I may continually resort:

 Thou hast given commandment to save me;

 For thou art my rock and my fortress.

 71:4Rescue me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked,

 Out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.

 71:5For thou art my hope, O Lord Jehovah:

 Thou art my trust from my youth.

 71:6By thee have I been holden up from the womb;

 Thou art he that took me out of my mother's bowels:

 My praise shall be continually of thee.

 71:7I am as a wonder unto many;

 But thou art my strong refuge.

 71:8My mouth shall be filled with thy praise,

 And with thy honor all the day.

 71:9Cast me not off in the time of old age;

 Forsake me not when my strength faileth.

 71:10For mine enemies speak concerning me;

 And they that watch for my soul take counsel together,

 71:11Saying, God hath forsaken him:

 Pursue and take him; for there is none to deliver.

 71:12O God, be not far from me;

 O my God, make haste to help me.

 71:13Let them be put to shame and consumed that are adversaries to my soul;

 Let them be covered with reproach and dishonor that seek my hurt.

 71:14But I will hope continually,

 And will praise thee yet more and more.

 71:15My mouth shall tell of thy righteousness,

 And of thy salvation all the day;

 For I know not the numbers thereof.

 71:16I will come with the mighty acts of the Lord Jehovah:

 I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only.

 71:17O God, thou hast taught me from my youth;

 And hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works.

 71:18Yea, even when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not,

 Until I have declared thy strength unto the next generation,

 Thy might to every one that is to come.

 71:19Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high;

 Thou who hast done great things, O God, who is like unto thee?

 71:20Thou, who hast showed us many and sore troubles,

 Wilt quicken us again,

 And wilt bring us up again from the depths of the earth.

 71:21Increase thou my greatness,

 And turn again and comfort me.

 71:22I will also praise thee with the psaltery,

 Even thy truth, O my God:

 Unto thee will I sing praises with the harp,

 O thou Holy One of Israel.

 71:23My lips shall shout for joy when I sing praises unto thee;

 And my soul, which thou hast redeemed.

 71:24My tongue also shall talk of thy righteousness all the day long;

 For they are put to shame, for they are confounded, that seek my hurt.
